The idea is to make a disadvantageously powerful item, but make wearing it both corrupting and risky. Somehow force solo play, where your friends could very well be your foes as the desire for power is tempting, and make group play impossible. As a player with this would be equivalent to a group themselves, having them in a group would completely ruin the purpose.
