Playing UO and running separate server

Hi,

I have been interested in trying my own UO server for years. I am recently back playing the game since my break from it in 1999.

So i am currently playing on a free server. I also want to try my own server.

I am totally new to programming so before I start getting to far into things:

I would like to still play on the free shard occasionally and run/modify my own server. Is it an issue to do that on the same computer?

Any direction is greatly appreciated.

Nope, just use a separate set of files.

Ehm, i do run my server and play on the same computer. (as well as many other games)
So far i've encountred no error of any kind.

You'll continue to not have an issue as long as you use separate files, as mentioned above.
