UOL / Map making Tutorial

Aurastin

Sorceror
I see a lot of threads on map making, but I have yet to find anything that really instructs what one really needs to know about map making.

Orbsyida and Ryandor both seem to have disappeared, so looking for help on either of those site of course is not an option. At least for now.

Does anyone have any tutorials for UOLandscaper they would share? Or even map making in general?

http://www.ryandor.com/files/makingmaps.11.pdf

Excellent guide. Covers all basic aspects of terrain generation.

Anything more, and there are people here experienced with both of the major mapmaking programs that can help you (UOL would be a similar principle, except your altitude and terrain type are separate bitmaps)

Both sites are "up" ryandor in the sense that all the files and articles are still accessible, but the forums are spam central and negelected. Orb in the sense that the forums and new content are active, but every time khaybel tinkers with something (almost weekly) all the old content gets "lost" somehow and has to be readded later

For me both Orbsydia and Ryandor do not work, and appear to be down. I am trying to access the sites from their links on Google.
Orbsydia gives me an Apache 2 Test Page.
and Ryandor (including the tutorial link you gave) only gives me the default Chrome Error: The requested URL could not be retrieved. :(

I appreciate you trying though.

Alright first, thanks for linking the tutorial for me. Now I just need to find out how to get the Dragon program.

As for the IP addresses. I tried to ping and tracert both addresses.
From my limited understanding, both failed. I've posted the log below.

And the part about flushing DNS cache or changing DNS servers I have not the slightest clue, but I'm here to learn.
Thanks.

I know I can't access Orbsydia from my phone's browser, but I'm not sure of the reasoning behind it.

With regards to map-making, I think you will find that you will need to use a combination of all of the tools in order to make a map successfully. This is because there have been so many changes to both Runuo and the client and most tools were created to work with past versions of both. So, while one program will extract your map, you'll have to use a completely different program to render the map, for instance.

Also, the first thing you will need to know is that earlier this year, the client switched to using uop files and I don't know of any program that currently works with them. So, you will need to find a slightly older client...7.0.2.2 or something is what I think I use (sorry, not at home, am in my phone so can't check that).

Anyway, UOL and Dragon are pretty similar utitilities. I am not sure why one is favored over the other, tbh, but I found someone familiar with UOL to help me, which caused that to be the program I was introduced to.

To get started using UOL, you will have to navigate to the UOL folder and run:

NewMapImage.exe

Project Name: SaferaRocks (rofl, j/k, make it whatever u want)
Select Map Size: Mondain's Legacy (896x512)
Default Terrain: Deep Water
Check: Dungeon Area
Leave Terrain.bmp and Altitude.bmp or rename, up to you.

UOL will save your bitmaps into a folder named whatever you named your project name.

Now, you take the base Terrrain.bmp and open it in Photoshop/Gimp/Paint.net or whatever graphics program you use.

In Photoshop, you have to load the color palette provided with UOL: Terrain.aco into Photoshop so that you only paint with those colors. Each color is assigned a basic land type in UOL, which is why you have to paint with these specific colors. Handily, the colors are titled in Photoshop with their respective land types. For instance, grass is green (rgb#006400) and deep water is blue (rgb#000082).

Now, paint a basic shape with the grass color and save your Terrain.bmp. (I suggest renaming it and saving often by the way so that you don't have to recreate your base Terrain.bmp all over again).

Now that you have a basic island drawn on Terrain.bmp, go to your UOL folder and open:

AltImagePrep.exe

UOL will attempt to auto-create a new Altitude image for you based upon your Terrain.bmp.

Next, in your UOL folder, run:

UOMapMake.exe

Load the path to your newly made Terrain.bmp and your new Altitude.bmp (made using AltImagePrep.exe).
Choose Random Static On (to have UOL created vegetation, etc based upon your land types).
Click: Make UO Map

Now, UOL will make your map.mul and statics.mul and your staidx.mul files. (Don't forget to rename them to include your map numbers eg map0.mul, statics0.mul, staidx0.mul). And then just drag and drop them into your UO client directory.

So, that is the basic jist, but you will find that there are so many finesses necessary to actually create nice looking maps, but a lot of that will come from practice and asking for help in the forums.

Good luck!

Safera,
You are awesome. Thanks so much for that little guide.

*blush* Thanks. I can't program worth anything, so the little I do know about graphics and maps I try to return to the community.

Did you ever figure out your website access problem the guys were trying to help you with?

I have a gut feeling that's it something with their ends in the way in which the web url's are handled.

For instance, if your are hosted at DomainAvenue, you have to have them set it so that both www.yourdomain.com and domain.com point to the same place. I also know that with Linux servers, URL pointing and forwarding can be edited in a config file by the domain owner, without screwing with the ISP's setup. I don't know how Windows handles domain pointing; however, so I'm guessing there may be some way that they are setup that is not compatible with something you are using...which browser are you using btw?

I tried to recreate my issue with Orbsydia and he made a changes to the "web server core" on July 31st. Now, I go to Orbsydia.com using Safari on my phone and no issues. I wonder if Aurastin is still having issues with that particular site?

Either way, I would think it does matter because Ryandor's web host still has to point the IP number to something in order for it to work properly.

Well going back to the whole connection issue. When I try to visit Orbsydia, I am directed to an Apache 2 Test Page. This happens if I try to connect using Chrome, Firefox, or IE.

I have no trouble viewing when I use a proxy, and when I use a computer at work. Of course using a work computer for private hobbies is not really acceptable.

check your Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file (just hosts, there's no extension on it) and see if orbsydia.com is in there redirecting it somewhere. If you find it in there, delete it. You could also try from the commandline typing "nslookup orbsydia.com", and it should tell you the IP address it resolves to. It resolves to 108.166.76.184 for me.

*edit: wow fail for me, didn't read back through all the trying of ip addresses and stuff before, kinda looks like you tried all that stuff. Sorry!

This is really bugging me, but I still think something is configured wrong on their end, whether it be redirects or a cache problem. I still get the same problem (seeing the apache start page) sometimes on my phone's Safari browser and sometimes not.

I asked Khaybel about it briefly and he said that he blocked a few ip ranges, but that doesn't explain us seeing the Apache page and it probably doesn't coincide with my issue of it only sometimes happening (unless my phone carrier uses dhcp that just happens to fall inside those ranges...but that's too big of coincidene, I would think. Plus, I would not think I would even see the Apache test page if my IP were being blocked.)

Here are some interesting reads I found while trying to find a solution to the problem (with no luck so far):
firefox url rewriting mysteriously, but not other browsers
WP Super Cache sometimes ignites a blank Home Page

I'm going to ask the server admin to have a look at this thread. I think it's a relevant topic to webmasters.

Safera

Page
If you can try again and let me know whether or not it's fixed, that would be great..otherwise,

Khaybel has looked into possible reasons why the site might not work for certain users and changed a few settings. He has resolved any issues for those behind a proxy.

If you are still having issues, he's more than happy to work with you to try to figure out your browser problems. You can reach him via email at Orbsydia at gmail.

If someone else is reading this with different issues and cannot reach a website, Khaybel suggested a nice tool to find out whether or not a website is down for everyone or just you: http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/

Hope this helps!

Safera, I have no idea how he managed to fix the problem. You're awesome. ;) The important thing is I am now able to view OrBsydia without any issues.

Thanks so much to yourself and all in this thread that took the time to help me find a solution to this problem.
And please thank Khaybel over at Orbsydia.
