Your right, it's merely the end of their calendar. Many believe that it would merely be the end of the age, not the end of the world.
The King James version of the bible also fucks up too many translations. It throws in the end of the world in a few of those translations which is the reason many bible thumpers believe the end is coming soon - when the correct translation is the "end of the age".
