Wondering if anyone knows why char name... - RunUO

Hiya,

Am wondering does anyone know why the char names were taken out of the account files? I can recall them showing the name of each char quite a few betas back, of course at that time the id number was needed too but instead it was opted to replace it with id instead of char name. Just wondering if the char name will ever be put back in and why it was taken out. Thanks

am I? lol could be but I could swear it did, when we first started this server I could swear the names of our chars showed up in the account file instead of the id numbers that show up now lol.

I'll go see if I can't find an old copy on the server and see if it's there to show you

well of course I can't lol, I can get back to version 21 but I think I started checking it out at like version 18. anyways maybe I am thinking of something else cuz 21 shows no names either just numbers.. oh well

I had earlier than that (14?) and I don't recall Char names... For a simple reason: What if two people have the SAME character name? How would the accounts.xml track whose Bob is whose? It HAS to go by ID number.

I doubt that too Rainman lol, not sure why I for some reason picture seeing a name in stead of an id number in that field or maybe there was another field or something. I don't know maybe I'm on drugs too never can tell

Is just really wierd cuz I can remember looking in the accounts.xml file and thinking wow this is great we don't have to wonder what char goes with what accounts or what they named their chars anymore like I had to in SPhere because it's all right here in the file! Drugs I don't know. Can't find it anywhere that way so I am probably just remembering 2 diff things that are for some reason corresponding in my memory as the same thing or something lol.

Getting off topic... how come the account name doesnt show in the props file? I'm assuming there's a reason but just don't know what it is?

I was messing with cleaning up some things today and brought a logged off person to me and got called away from the puter for a little while, when I went back and sat down I was like hmm now who was this again? Checked props and nothing there to tell me lol. Is this on purpose?

I assume it was done on purpose.

No reason for staff besides admin to know account names.

yeah I kinda thought that was why but then... Admin can't see any either lol so it's defeating that purpose wouldn't ya think? other than online accounts that is which we see on the Admin gump itself but once you close that Admin gump you're shit outta luck if you want to know who that char in front of you belongs too (unless of course you open the account file and look up the ID of the char to find it etc lol)
