Will that be supported?
Or at least Unix or FreeBSD? ... There are many reasons, such as: - Windows's performance sux compared to them... - All of those are extremely suitable for running servers... - You need a license to run an illegal commercial shard if u do it under windows. - Most good servers where people'd be able to install RUO run under linux or unix... What do u think? Or does .NET not support linux\unix? |

Issue 1: - Windows's performance sux compared to them... The fact of the matter is that this performance gain is negligible and in fact, it down right doesn’t even matter. Your RunUO shard, should be the ONLY thing running on your server, and if that’s the case OS overhead wont matter. If your running other things, that’s your problem not ours. All of the *nix variants are great for MULTITASKING, and do so much better than Windows does, however as I said, if your running multiple tasks on your RunUO server then that’s your choice, we don’t suggest it. Issue 2: - All of those are extremely suitable for running servers... So is Windows... in an APPLICATION server mode such as this, you have no need for the benifits of a multi tasking operating system such as *nix Issue 3: - You need a license to run an illegal commercial shard if u do it under windows. You cannot run a commercial shard period end of story. Commercial is defined as you make profit from, and this is illegal. You do need a license to run the Operating system, you need a license for every operating system, including all of the *nix variants, some just cost more than others. Issue 4: - Most good servers where people'd be able to install RUO run under linux or unix... If your defining this as a colocated server or what have you talk to your host. If you provide them with a Windows 2000 License the odds are good they will switch the server to windows for you with a nominal charge. If they wont, your host sucks, get a new host. My personal thoughts on this issue, is that I love Linux and it has its place, but for this application it is not worth the effort to port it to support Linux. Once the MONO team gets their project ( http://www.go-mono.com ) up to speed I am more than willing to look at making RunUO MONO compliant, but until then... Windows it is! |

Microsoft's vision for the .Net framework is that it will be implemented for *nix, Mac, and others. In theroy (at least in the perfect Microsoft world) once .Net is implemented in another OS; RunUO, or any app built on the .Net framework, should in turn run on that platform.
Of course, that's what Java was supposed to bring us too... |

So, now that I am a loser, I will tell you this. #1 your avatar is stupid, and you will no longer be allowed to use them #2 you show absolute idiocy in your comments regarding the MAC platform #3 you show incomptency by saying he said the most "obvious things" when in reality all he did was state the facts, that are the goals of .NET. I tire of your attitude Richard, and if you want to be a member of this community, loose the chip on your shoulder. |
