Default Original Moongates....

I know back in the beta of UO the moongates were very cool. Each of the gates were linked to the phases of the two moons, hence "moongate". A gate would open according to the phase of one moon and the destination of that gate was determined by the phase of the second moon. Are there any plans to put in real "moongates" in RunUO or are they just going to stay as Star Trek transporters?

No comments? No answers? Am I just freaking crazy? Are the phases of the moon tracked in RunUO? Anyone?

They are tracked (check out Scripts\Items\Skill Items\Tinkering\Clocks.cs) and you can see it when you use (double click) a spyglass.

I didn't reply earlier because I don't know too much about re-wiring the moongate gumps but if this info helps you do it we'll look forward to seeing how it works out.

maybe it will be fixed on RunUO 1.0, as they say it will be "exactly" like osi...

Dude... OSI has given up on that system about 5 years ago. The RunUO moongates work 100% like on OSI.

Post away, I think it's actually a decent idea for an RP shard.

No idea on how to script it but I'll put it on the bottom of my todo list (item nr 274222 :P) and if I don't have to dig for any info then all the better.

Shouldn't be too hard to script but that's always difficult to say at the beginning of sketchily outlined project hehe.

Well, looks like someone had done this. It's actually a wonderful idea for a RP shard. It was really cool during the original days. I don't know why it was changed. Probably has something to do with people not wanting to "wait" for the moongate to open up. Such lazy people....

It made moongate travel something you had to plan for instead of just zipping all over the place. Forced more traffic to the roads, where is should be. The great fun or roleplaying is meeting another party on the road and exchaging stories.

From what I recall off the top of my head there were 2 moons that went through 8 phases. The phase of the first moon determined which "moongate" (hence the term) was opened. The phase of the second moon determined where the opened gate's destination was. The phases of the first moon changed slower than the phases of the second moon. So as the phases of the moons changed different gates would open at different places and have different destinations. Some combinations would only occur every so many cyles of the moon. It was really neat. I even remember crowds gathering around the gates waiting for them to open. Lots of stories, trading and conversation took place at the gates when this happened.

I don't remember the exact gate numbering or the time span of the phases though.

Those moongates are a royal pain in the ars, and i quote...They shouldnt be on any shard thats not t2a, aka Rebirth...Something about waiting for a moongate to change so i can go to friggin Minoc just tickles me the wrong way...anywho, thats my rant on this
