Less than a week ago I opened the server I've been working with in the past few months. Its still a work in progress but I thought having ppl testing and playing would allow me to tweak things better and create new stuff based on players ideas/suggestions. The thing is, after posting info on it on 3 forums that I visit regularly I had no feedback what so ever and I guess its due to the "better" offers like wow or Lineage2. UO shards may have huge flexibility in content creation, but how can it stand with titles that graphically leave uo in a dark forgotten hole? In your opinion, is UO outdated? Is it worth working on it? I don't know about you, but I sure like to see my work appreciated and somewhat known. Although I really enjoy coding in runuo, the idea that no one will ever see it sucks...
Anyone has a better perspective or insight to share? ![]() |

If you are creating a shard for others, don't bother, as there are many out there. If you are creating a world of your own to play in and hope that others may enjoy it too, it is well worth it.

It's for myself of course, but playing it alone isn't funny at all...
I initially started working on my own sever cause I've played in various servers and there were always things that didn't make sense or were plain stupid and even in some cases, the staff wasn't the best. So I added, modified, changed things the way I saw as being the best. I tried to create a mid place between AOS and pre. Oh well... just expressing the thoughts that roam my mind atm... |

No problem at all. I was just pointing out that if it's for yourself, others may like it also, but all too frequently, when shards are made for others, the person making it gets disillusioned quickly. Put your shard on UOGateway and ConnectUO and see what happens.

I made the shard for myself, and for others...
I haven't considered that... gonna see how it's done... although I've been working with runuo for two years, I've never even though how one goes to advertise it and get ppl interested in it... Also, I'm hoping the new client will bring some life to uo and more weight on the graphic unbalance uo is currently experiencing... ![]() |

I never thought UO ( I played up until LBR then quit after the Orc/Savage campaign) was that outdated, but after I got into RunUO with the intention of making a T2A-LBR era shard, I realized that every expansion has cool content, but a lot of garbage comes with it. I made the shard for myself and my friends around town, and have found more and more people playing every week. The way our shard is getting players is mainly through word of mouth. And it all started with the initial 4 players, including myself just spreading word that we had brought UO back. So an answer to "is UO outdated"? I would say its only as dull as the player makes it out to be, like people that play strictly 3D action-rpgs like WOW or SWG might not take as much from it, as their expectations are higher, but for myself and a lot like me, I feel UO has more content (most of it not utilized fully) than any game I've seen ever...with only Morrowind coming close.
Malaperth couldn't have said it any better though, making a shard for others first just leads you in too many different directions and you come up with conflicts. Not that I'm giving advice, just agreeing with Malaperth from personal experience. ![]() Last edited by Makaar; 03-23-2007 at 04:27 AM. |

I don't feel UO is out-dated, but then again UO is my favorite game considering it was the first MMORPG I ever played
. I have a private server for myself and a couple of others. I plan on modifying scripts to try and replicate the old UOR gameplay and looks. This will be quite a bit of work, but I think it'd be completely worth it because its recreating the game that I loved before EA add the garbage that draged it down and ruined it (my opinion). I think WoW is just a prettier 3D UO considering all the concepts are essentailly the same if you think about it.. professions.. many dungeons and monsters.. sure these things are in alot of games today, but UO came before alot of them, and definately came before WoW was even thought of. Also in my opinion UO has the best profession system ever ^^ Just wanted to add my 2 cents take care. |

A game is only as outdated as the people who play it. I'm 17, and I know a whole lot of other younger people who play it, therefore there is hope for a lasting crowd.
Oh and the best way to get people on your server is invite your friends first. People see that there's people online, and they join in. |
