Default Using the original Client and RunUO?

I wanted to ask if the original client from 1997 can be used with the latest RunUO? I'm just toying with the idea of creating a shard that only uses the original graphics. I'd love to be able to get children back into the game as well. I remember originally there were kids that used to wander and play about the towns. I think Origin cut them out when they started getting killed by players and monsters. Anyhow, I'm tossing around the idea of a shard that is based off of the original released client and game features. Can RunUO do this and will the original client work?

Thanks
John

i do believe you have to be patched to 5.0+ to use runuo rc1 or any of the svn's

and i do not think the origional client will patch that high - if it patches at all

LG is right about patching with the original, though. I have a Ren/3D disc and it only goes as far as around 4.0 then can't patch.

The real issue would be modding all the scripts so the server would run like it did back in 1997. UORebirth was a server that ran from like 1997 but I think it closed down a while ago. Doing it from scratch would be quite time consuming.

As for children I don't remember them in 1997 or even in the beta. I heard they were talked about but I don't recall ever seeing them. I still have the original beta CD, that would be something to get running. A lot of the art is significantly different. Would probably be a nightmare to get working with RunUO though...

I belive the paperdoll graphics are there, but were never used. Children in UO is probably just them carrying over ideas from the offline Ultimas. However its a little different killing a child npc, and killing a child player. It also opens up a whole new world for pedophiles. So it was abandoned for obvious reasons.

there is the origional Ultima games out there
that were out long before UO, and is what UO is based on
and even 1 of them was published after UO came out - Ultima IX (but that one sucked)

might want to dig up an old computer, and get the collection and play from about 4 or 5 through 7b and both underworlds

then you would be playing Ultima Single Player

then once you have completed all those thenb play 8 and then 9

8 and 9 sucked. 8 had a hot lady executioner tho XD.

I didnt discover them till long after they were made, but the offline ultimas are really fun, especially 7. And you can get ultima 1-8 on the ultima collection CD (try ebay or amazon). Most, if not all of them are abandonware so you can download them as well.
You don't really need to find an old computer like greywolf said either, theirs dos emulators, MOSLO and specific projects to recreate/port certain ultimas for windows and modern hardware, exult for ultima 7, pentagram for 8, nuvie for 6, etc. All of which are free.

and peoharen no idea where to find them

I don't think there were any children gumps, only the animations. They were never actually implemented in the game.

I have been using the Renaissance client with RunUO 1.0, and it has been working fine. I am not sure about how it would work with 2.0 .

hmm... If a guy wants to use an old client for his shard (no matter what the reason), why the hell would he need to patch? Once you patch an old client, or even attempt to getting part way, its not the old client anymore. Am I the only one that understands this?

Just install the old client you want to use, and leave it unpatched. You may have some issues that need attention to login, and most definetly will have some items/graphics that are not in the older client (like some etheral mounts and whatever else) but should not have anything serious.

Once successfull, any other players will also need to install the same version unpatched, to match your shard theme/style. That is all.

Probably all he has is the original UO CD and not any of the later ones. And probably has a dialup connection and doesn't want to download it.

Let me guess. Your favorite type of character to play is a Necromancer. Right?

I tried playing using my original The Second Age CD but I get a message along the lines of "there was an issue trying to connect to the server, please try again later". I get this until I patch to at least 3.0.

I really miss T2A interface and the treasure chest menu. Any ideas?

Also someone said you cannot patch all the wya, you can. I've patcehd all the way to Mondain's Legacy using T2A CD.

You need at least client 2.0.3 to play on RunUO. The encryption was a lot different prior to this version, and RunUO doesn't support that old encryption.

Even with the 2.0.3 client some things won't work properly, like the skills display, because those packets changed at some point over the years (When they added power scrolls and started displaying skill caps for individual skills).

I'm not sure what version is the oldest that supports all of the "essential" packets like skills, but I would guess somewhere around 3.0.

Any suggestion as to how to get around the "There is a problem communicating with the server, please try again in a few minutes" message?

modify the packets handlers in the core to support the old client.

Not quite sure what that is or how to do that, but is that a server side thing?

Yes you'd have to edit and recompile the Core (ie download the source either for RC2 or for the SVN and compile that).
