The search function, to which so many users point when you ask a question, sucks so hard it's unbeliveable. You could have a cheap non-english-speaking chinese guy pick out better results than the search engine for these forums. I don't get across these forums often, because when i do, i can't find what i'm looking for, ever, and no i'm not the only one, everybody tells me the same thing.
If you don't filter out results, there's so many results that it probably just redirects you to runuo.com/forum/ and makes you find the answer yourself. But if you only just touch the filters, there's 0 results found. So please either enlighten us how this holy device works or just remove it cause it's a wastage of time and bandwidth. |

Change your wording. If you do not know how to effectively use the search engine here, you will not be able to effectively use any search engine, as the skills are pretty much the same as any other search engine, such as Google, which incidentally you can use to search this website as well.
here's how to search specific websites/domains in google: Code:
the phrase you are searching for site:example.com Code:
skillcaps modify change site:runuo.com Note that i also used both modify and change, as some people might choose one or the other in the thread, and this way it treats them both equally in the ordering process. That applies for all search engines. But really, theres nothing wrong with the site's search engine except for the minimum of four letters, which I believe is a php or vB limitation. Well then it seems you must be a 1337 H4X0R such as yourself to make it work, cause for all the people i've talked to, it didn't. They tell me just not to bother using the search cause if i can't find it by hand the search ain't gonna make it any easyer.
The problem is, every other search engine works just fine, except this waste of time of yours. And yes, the only way to find anything in this forum, is by using google with it's sintax that does work. Four letter is not a php limitation, i believe the min-4-letter is in place to prevent too many results. Last edited by Vis3R; 08-17-2007 at 11:29 AM. |

Now, I'm not in defense of the main poster here... but I do want to say that when I first started coming here and trying to find things on this site, the search function did aggravate the ever living crap out of me. It's not that it doesn't work, it's that it's so BROAD at what it finds... that a lot of times you have be extremely detailed as to what you are looking for.
Now, that being said... once someone pointed out to me the filters (in which I really didn't pay much attention to begin with...) I started to use the search function with a lot more success. Especially when you search just the thread titles only.... that narrows it down A LOT. But still... there are threads that I've come across in the past that I can't ever seem to find, even when using the search engine... and it usually boils down to a certain keyword that use must know... (for example: 'duel' instead of 'pvp' or something like that...) that keeps you from finding exactly what you are looking for. If you don't use the 'topic filter', then you get TONS of results about threads that have nothing to do with it. I'm not knocking the search function... because I know the RunUO team has not control over that... I just think that from time to time when people wanna nail someone to a cross and scream "use the search function!", that sometimes people have tried just that and haven't had much luck. If it wasn't for someone pointing out the topic filter.. I'd be just as lost as ever. |

Indeed you have the right to complain....But should you?
Lets see anything you've ever recieved from this site you paid exactly how much for? You contributed what exactly to this community to help improve it? As for your baseless claim about the search function...I use it daily to help answer questions others dont feel like wasting thier time searching for, or in your case people who say they can't find what they are looking for. In most cases it answers my questions so I dont have to post them. Why don't you give us an example of what your looking for, I'd be happy to show you just how well the search function works. Provided your search has been addressed in the past.

Some advice. It's damned rude to tell people providing you a damned free service to fix their damned forum. (Yes, it's "damned" not "damn"). |

Ooh what do we have here, a wannabe internet teacher?
I know you have nothing smart to say, but you see, somebody has to pay for the useless bs you put on these forums, and that's your beloved ryan. 2,882 posts? Thats alot of bandwidth to pay for your bs, i would sue you. |

HHhmmm.. lets see... how much trouble have I had with the search engine? ... *thinks* ..... *thinks some more* (ouch) What was the topic about again? I just got a headache from thinking..... Oh yeah.. the search engine. I've had no troubles with it what so ever. Sure, maybe I find more than the 1 tiny lil thing I was looking for, but it usually ends up providing me with more information than I figured I would get. Theres an old saying concerning computers which fits search engines PERFECTLY... "Garbage In, Garbage Out". Know what your looking for from the beginning, not some vague notion and you just might find its actually helpful. Works for me everytime.

You can only teach those with the capacity for learning. That usually requires higher brain functions. Quote:
