You need a colocation datacenter to host your computer. Take your machine there and plug her in. Costs vary. Most require rackmont equipment.
Chicago Colocation - Chicago Server Colocation - NetSource

I cant afford that. So... i use dyndns.org and a static ip from home. Works fine for now.

No need for collocation. Just get a private server from some place like Server Beach or Cari.Net. Prices start at $60/M. If you cannot afford that, you likely cannot afford a hosted server in any form.

ServerBeach - Managed and Unmanaged Dedicated Hosting
Dedicated Servers & Dedicated Server Clusters - Custom, Linux, Windows, & FreeBSD

Cari Net's servers are cheaper. Server Beach is known for 100% first class service, reliability, and serviceability. Since this is not a business, go with Cari Net.

I can vouch for Server Beach. They are unmanaged servers (meaning you are responsible for the server maintenance etc.) but they are relatively inexpensive and have a great connectivity with wide bandwidth.

If you decide to use them, PM me, they have a referral progam and I might be able to save you some $$$ on the setup while also getting a referral credit toward my account.

ok I found this in my exploration... http://www.hostmysite.com/vps/windows/asp/

I am going to go and check out the others up above over the next day or so.

QUESTION: Say I try to host this at my house. I have an independent computer to use as a server. What kind of speeds up/down, and what kind of bandwidth I am I going to need. This is going to be for a summer camp, and I can't see having more then 50 peps at the most on line at any given time. And 50 would be an extreme. During camp there would be 22 or so online and after camp if they want to play at home somewhere in the 30's I would think.

Other people may have a different opinion, but I would suggest that if you have a broadband connection, that's what you should go with for a "summer camp". Unless you can somehow write off the dedicated server. The bills add up, dontcha know.

well, heres what id say, broadband would be best, (as im guessing what C said)
i host my server on my home pc on 10mb broadband no ones complained of lag, but depending on what type of ERA your server will be, is how ya should go about it, right now, i host my server on a 3.0 ghz Dual Core, 500 gig sata drive, and 4 gigs of ram, (windows only supporting 3.5 gigs of it tho) and my save times at 400k items are between .9 and 1.5 on 2.0 ML ERA with custom items. 40 players on avrg so it seems to be good for now.

but in the long run if your shard happens to get popular i would recommend going for Pro hosting or if ya can afford a faster connection and computer later on upgrade that stuff.

but just starting out/not alot of players home hosting would be advisable no sense in spending money on a server when its not needed

I don't want to spend any more then I have to, I am on AT&T with decent speed, but I think I can speed it up a bit more. I have a follow up question. I am going to host the camp at my house and each student will have there own lap top to play on, (they are brining their own) What kind of wireless router would you all recommend?

*Shrug*

Anything with a good reputation should do just fine. The bandwidth of wireless locally will far exceed your broadband and work very very well indeed.

Linksys and Netgear both have good reputations. I'd pick one or the other. I think some regard D-Link positively also.

Joe.

The Planet and SoftLayer are reputable, I'd go with one of them. Else check webhostingtalk.com to help make your decision. 60/mo for a server and you get what you pay for. Look for something at least 100/mo if you want quality. 10mbps is more then enough for a typical shard.

Definatly check webhostingtalk.com, there's offers and reviews on there all the time.
When you choose a company, search their forums for any good/bad reviews, but bear in mind, people are FAR more likely to complain, then compliment.

Cool

I can hook you up with almost any server, for as little as 55E/month, setup fee's may be applicable, but doubtful.

These Servers are 100% uptime guaranteed and come with full Remote Adminstration/Desktop and Terminal Server/IIS standard installs with win 2k3 or web edition, you chose.

The servers are located at two datacenters, the main one being We-Dare, Rotterdam, Netherlands - Which provide up to 2000gb unmonitored* bandwidth on a 10gbit or 100mbit connection with up to 3 ip addresses and full remote APC access (at an extra charge of around 5Euro).

*unmonitored meaning that the company doesn't much care about your bandwidth usage, therefore is technically "unlimited".

I currently own a dedicated dual core xeon for only 55Euro/month - with my hosting company owner being a good friend, i can strike deals for people who need to get the best out of their shard or applications.

If interested, contact me at admin@vorspire.com and we can arrange an interview and quote for you within a few hours. (Please do not PM me, as I don't check PM's so often. -MSN is available upon request.

Regards
