Default player drivable spawn?

I like it when rat invasions and orc invasion events occur in a popular city. People enjoy the rallying experience of banding together to fight to protect their home town. It would be pretty simple to spawn rats/orc/dragons or whatever near a town and make the center of it their destination.

Possible troubles:
Too strong an invasion for the players that try to fight it
Random invasion with nobody around at the time to fight it

I also like the idea of mass combat. One thing I have been wondering about is the possibility of having something like an OrcStone that a player can click on and have his character replaced by a regular Orc that he can drive. Once killed he simply respawns as a new Orc back by the stone. Similarly there would be a FighterStone that spawns player drivable Fighter replacement characters. This setup would allow two groups of players, some of whom may otherwise shy away from fighting to battle using basically even forces.

Possible troubles:
Suspending a character and replacing him with a new character with the properties of an Orc, that may actually be quite a stretch.
Main requirement for mass combat is, masses of players who all get involved at the same time

The only thing I can think of to solve the character replacement problem is to try to avoid it all together. Maybe this could be done by having a character slot that is dedicated to SpawnStone characters or just to one of OrcStone/FighterStone.

The solution to the masses of players problem would be to combine the SpawnStone and the Invasion concepts. For whatever reason, the Invasion starts and the OrcStone starts spawning Orcs headed to the city. In response the FighterStone starts spawning Fighters. Any one of the Orcs or Fighters may actually be controlled by a Player or a Seer. The game Seers or some other condition later stops the invasion unceremoniously or with a Boss of some kind.

This is not a request for support or a request for a script. This topic is for entertainment/discussion only and to gage how crazy this idea is so I can finally get it out of my head. Thank you.

I have always liked the idea of a buildable enemy force. Take your Stone and create a player counter. For every player in range add 5 orcs with random waypoints into the city. Once a certain amount of players are in range have the stone spawn a stronger mob or boss. To prevent endless killing add a on/off switch to the stone a GM can activate to start the event. The stone would maintain a spawned cap based on players in range for continual carnage.

You could probably do this with XML spawner quite easily.
