I really recommend doing research using google.
You seem to know nothing about the subject, so you've got a very long path to walk.

I recommend first learning what linux is and then what linux distributions are.
You can't really start before you've understand what distro you want (since you will want to use a distro).

Distro = distribution btw.

LinuxQuestions.org is an amazing website. Their forums are full of helpful information and people. They also have many reviews, tutorials, hardware compatibility lists and just about anything you could ask for. I highly suggest taking a good long look there before you proceed or at anytime you are confused or have a question =)

To start off you could download a LiveCD version of for example Ubuntu. That way you can just restart your PC and boot from the CD, and you can try it out without actually having to install it on your hard drive.

Default My thoughts

I like 3 of the major distros... I like Ubuntu for overall performance, ease of use, ease of install, and dependability. Also, Mandriva and Red Hat (I consider these the same, though sold/manufactured/updated seperately, red hat is what mandriva was based on) are great alternatives, easy to install (but more resource hungry - like windows) and not quite as stable as Ubuntu. Suse is also easy to use, easy to install and the ones who made mono which makes them well suited to run a shard (although mono is available on pretty much any linux distro)... There are many others that are really good, but those are the ones I like the most (I currently am finishing setting up ubuntu on a desktop to run my uo shard).
