i think that depends on the client you use and not the server, also it depends on the shard and what patches they have for you to download. but runUO is not out of beta yet so making a custom shard isnt ready yet cause you cant use custom maps yet. but it will be when its out of beta

You can use custom maps.

so how would you go about getting runUO to load the custom maps, do they need to be in the runUO dir?

umm, you can use a custom map to play on OSI shards..
its not the client you use, but the files that are customized.. Map0.mul, statics0.mul, and staidx0.mul found in the UO dir.

Just put the custom map in your UO folder in place of the default maps and runuo will use them.

i havent gotten to play with it yet due to probs dloading runUO, but...

If you wanna mess with custom maps, you gotta see if they have the start locations already put in as part of it (Its beta and not complete right?). If they do not have this part of customization added yet, you can start on a custom map, but unless land matches land for start positions, you may find yourself standing in the middle of the ocean.

This is from personal experience and messing with other emu's... Always make sure that the first thing you do when logging on, other than praying it works, is to find the X,Y,Z locations for players to start in.

Starting locations aren't scriptable yet, but character creation is. You can override the start location there.

a shard is a server runUO is a server also its an emulator cause it emulates a uo server. the client is the program used to connect to the server like UO: lbr or UO: third dawn

if you watched the uo intro movie you would know that tthe story goes the origenal world got broken into many smaller worlds called shards and each world evolved on its own that is why a server is called a shard kinda like a shard of glass when you break glass
