Default Good day, I am new..

Having been fed up with the Normal EA servers and the lack of interesting updates.. Basically just got tired of the main additions being new monsters to fight and new items to use. Some of which seems to not take someone very long to do, yet seems to take the EA developers quite some time...

Of course, we all want a world where we can add what we wish with our crative minds. Maybe most of us came here because we had some really good ideas and the EA development team just didn't seem to listen.

Well, thats me at least. I've got a nice world up and running. Its not public as I'd like to feel like its on a finishing side before releasing it. I have a computer set up designated for this UO world. Its always up and running. I've been working long hours to rebuild the clasic feel of the Ultima Series, starting it right after the avatar left for serpent isle. I've got a great scripter who has been doing some amazing things, but I feel bad about pushing him to do so much of my ideas.. So, thats why I've come here.. I need help, I need answers..

I am doing well at tearing appart the files and learning the scripting part of it.. But my problem is trying to determin which files work for what.. Right now, I would very much like to use some of the old Gump art. Maybe create new items to be used and wearable. Can someone tell me what files I need to look at.. Thought about putting in wigs as the art is there for it. So, can you tell me which files to look at, or is there an instruction section that tells how to do what?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

From what it sounds like you're asking you could use InsideUO to find out all the art that you want and you can just make new scripts for the item you want. If you want to know how to make it just look at something similar maybe if it's a wig I think you can't do anything with it so look at the rares maybe that are just for decoration like a wig. I dunno exactly what you are wanting. There's also gump studio to make gumps. If you want to make a lot of old gumps in use like the paperdoll perhaps you will want to patch the mul files, but then players have to download them.

It should be pointed out that if you make custom art, while the players on your shard will need to have the necessary files, UO Gateway will download them automatically when your players connect.

Behold the power of the search engine!

Even though this may be stated and overstated it also is underdone. The search function provided in the top bar of these forums is capable of solving well over 75% of your problems in the first few tries without any of the problems that come with actually posting a question.

A few helpful tips (which some people may disagree with):

Runuo has extensive documentation (slightly programmer oriented) in the runuo folder under docs. You may be able to find more in there than you think.

Gump studio is currently one of the most popular programs to create ingame gumps (pop-up screens), grab it at www.orbsydia.com and give it a try.

Run a search for 'scripting toolkit' and you'll find a nice selection of files that will help create generic things like basic weapons and armor.

Keep documentation of what you change! Especially if you intend to edit default scripts you are recommended to keep documentation. It'll cut back on the errors later.

When editing maps (not decorating but editing), art files and hue files be aware that your players (as was said before) will need to download these if they want to be able to see what changed. Also be aware that you may have to redo all these changes come the next UO expansion.

The playermobile.cs is one of the most edited files. If you edit it, be aware that old players need to be converted to the new playermobile (not always easy or risk free).

I am sure others here on these forums will have at least a few pages of helpful hints to add.

Good luck and welcome to runuo.
