Are you getting an error message? What OS are you running?

That could be the result of a few different conditions.

1. You may have a virus.
2. You could have some faulty RAM.
3. You could have an expansion card that needs to be reseated, or even replaced.
(a video card that is failing or needing to be reseated can cause this)
4. You could have some major OS errors that require a complete re-install.
5. It could be an environmental issue, if the air is very dry then it could be as simple as a static dishcarge through the keyboard.
6. There could be an issue with your electricity supply. Either the power supply or the actual house feed. If the house feed is instable you could be experiencing brown outs. In most cases a UPS will not offer any protection against a brown out as they do not alter the current drastically enough to cause it to engage the battery.
7. You may have a cooling/heating issue. If your processer is not being cooled sufficiently that could cause the system to restart.

There are actually quite a few other issues that could cause this as well. In any event you need a knowledgable service person.

It could be Windows update set to auto download and install.

I am almost 98% sure you are running windows 98se

I have had this problem when I run 98, no hardware or software problems, I've had this with a puter that has been used for many years and on those that were freshly formatted (more than 1 machine)

I really am not sure the cause (it could be a driver problem but if so its something I use on all my puters) but 98 did have a shutdown problem that was never resolved (see windows update for the patch info)

the thing I did to stop it was use another OS such as 2k or xp

if your not on 98 (ME might have the same problem), then the error is completely different.

please note, that it didn't do this all the time.

Windows 98 shutdown problem was that it wouldn't shutdown, not random restarts.

I'm one of those geeks that actually reads things before installing them, and one of the Hotfixes for win98 included a reboot problem that was only 1/2 working when work on 98 was ended, its not the same as the shutdown problem.

right and since neither 98se or ME is very stable, I would not suggest using them as servers.

XP is what I suggest, home pro it doesnt matter. Not only will the new OS solve the reboot problem, but XP manages memory a lot better and I can't seem to crash it (I've tried and am good at crashing things) without purposly messing something up.

2k pro and 2003 server are just as good if you already have one.

if you are short on money, I'd go with 2k or xp home. It IS worth the upgrade, if you have more than 1 puter, get XP pro, it allows you to install it on more than 1 so that makes it worth the extra $$$

No it doesn't. If you want multiple installs you need multiple licenses.

I have home, not pro so I cannot be sure, but I was told that the pro version doesn't need to be "registered" so to speak, thus allowing more than 1 install... or something like that

if not, then my recomendation stands with XP in any case, as xp home or pro is still a lot better than 98 or me

XP is liscensed to one machine per copy.

Windows 2000 had a 1 copy per 2 PROCESSOR liscense, which some people claimed allowed you to legally use 1 copy on two single processor computers (Mircrosft clarified it later as 1 computer with UP TO 2 processors)

It is the Volume licensed WinXP Pro that does not need to be activated through the web.
So you COULD install it on another machine, but that WOULD be illegal without purchasing another license

the only version of XP that does not need to be registered is the corporate version. And unless you have an expensive volume license agreement with microsoft, it is illegal for you to own it.

I dunno, I have two xp cds, one that installs on all Dell's and you never need to reg it, and one that installs on everything else, and you never need to reg it. Both came packaged with a bulk order we bought from dell of over 200 cpus.

It is true that alot of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) versions of windows ( such as Dell, Compaq, Toshiba, etc ) do not need to be registered. However, those products have been fully licensed to those corporations, and those corporations have made changes to them. They are now considered products of the manufacturer, and are not recognised or supported by Microsoft. In fact, as far as Microsoft is concerned, they are not even Microsoft products any more.

So I dont know what dell has done to that OS, and I cant comment intelligently on it.

Well...you can still get OEM software (WinXP included) at...say Newegg. W/out some random computer company having screwed with it first. I hate computer companies. All they put on there are the "FREE AOL AND ULIMITED INTERNET" icon installers...

ja...like I'm going to get AOL...*shudder*
