Question Router problems

Ok, I am very new to RunUO, but I had everyone and their brother helping me figure out why I could not get a friend connected to my server today. I changed ip address' in the file, I download Mr. Fixit into the file, I've tried everything, and can not seem to get my friend to connect to my server. My computer is connected to a router that my fiance uses as well, and he is afraid of opening everything up and leaving our computers open for hacking or whatever. Can someone help me figure out another way to get my friend onto my server? Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated!

Hosting a shard is just as dangerous as opening a random port on your computer. Also if somebody wanted to hack your computer, they could already do it, the routers are our customer level are not going to stop experienced hackers. There is no other way, you must forward your shard, otherwise you cannot host a shard.

Right, I understand that. But you say I must forward my shard. To where, and how do I do that? I'm sorry if this is a bother, but like I said, I am very new to this so I am still trying to understand all the aspects of running your own shard.

Port forwarding, also known in some routers as NAT (Network Address Translation) or as Virtual Servers, is pretty simple to set up. All the information you need is the port number to be forwarded (2593 in this case) and the local LAN IP of the computer running your shard (usually looks like 192.168.x.x)

Specific instructions aren't really possible without being familiar with the exact type of router you have, since obviously the configuration screen is going to look different from one type of router to another.

Yeah, he knows how to do it, I'm the one that doesn't. He says he doesn't want to make the computers unprotected...blah blah blah...

And I did follow the directions, down to the letter, but still was unable to get my friend onto my shard. So, another friend that has his own shards that was helping me suggested that I post on here to see if anyone can help me. I have no idea how to configure the router or anything. I am not sure if I can only open it to my computer but still leave his protected or whatever. His computer is the main connection point then mine feeds from the router...I think thats how it works..*feeling completely dumb now* So anyway, thats where I am at this point. Is there a sight that allows you to load your shard and they become your server? Just wondering

You followed the directions that explain how to forward the port?

We can't tell you how to do it, either get somebody to show you in person, or follow the directions that explain how to forward a port.

Sounds like he doesn't know how to do it, his excuse his a poor one, if he was worried about security he wouldn't allow you to run a shard.

Opening one port WILL NOT PUT YOU AT RISK more then you already are at.

Default Didn't know about that one

Ok, I guess I didn't find all of the posts, because I dont remember seeing one about forwarding...is it possible that you could point me in the right direction for those directions please? Hell, if I have to get on his computer and change this stuff myself, that is what I'll do to open my computer up. Thanks

Its not a post, its your directions for your router, there is a help document when you login to it that you can read and follow.

Again you should let him, if he knows what he is doing, so you don't screw up anything up.
