Getting Started

I read the FAQs and starting guides, but I'm still a little confused on how this will work.

(1)First, it says to install a new installation of UO (which client do I install, I have the Age of Shadows version). And it says to patch to the latest version...when I played it thru real UO, it patched when it connected to the UO patch servers, so how odo you patch it?

(2)I use to play it thru official UO....if I install this current version of RunUO as it is, will it look like that with the towns and stuff the way it was on there...or do you have to create your own shard from scratch?

(3)Also what about the way you could place a house and customize on there, will I be able to do that on here.

(4)the layman's terms post says to download UseUO for GM abilties, the link is invalid and the runuo.com download section doesn't have it in the archives, any idea where to get this


I'm sure these questions have been asked before, but I couldn't find anything on here pertaining to those.

damn where to start

1 = patch it as you normally do for the OSI server, just dont try to connect - you have to use UOgateway for that.
2 = Yes you will see the same map as you do on a UO server
3 = Yup the custom house tool exists and is working
4 = you would want to use pandora's box
May i recomend playing on freeservers BEFORE trying to run one? No matter how bright you are, your most likely going to get hopelessly lost and give up with the sheer ammount of data thats coming your way. Play a free shard for a bit and apply for a low level staff position, slowly work your way up in the ranks and then when you have about 6 months experience at Admin level you should be prepared to think about starting your own free server.

Just open UO normally as if to connect to the pay servers; It will open the patch client, and automatically patch. It will take a few hours depending on your connection, and SE alone takes 45 mins on broadband. When it is done downloading all patches, close it out and you are patched to date

Yes it will look like normal UO. It will have the decoration and everything, however, you will have to customize it yourself.

Yes, there is a better tool, that post is very old. I remember it being on the forums when I joined in 2003(not on this account). The new tool people use for GM abilities is called Pandora's Box. I'm not sure where you can get it from as the site is down though

Only I was still wandering about, for my first ?...the Age of Shadows is ok to install?

AoS is fine...you'll still have SE in the server, you just won't be able to craft the SE items, although your players running SE will be able to.
