Default I will probly get flammed for this.. **Feels the burn**

i dont post to often.. mostly cuse i do get flammed.. but ive knowticed that over the few months ive been readin these fourms.. ppl continue to ask in a nut shell the same questions.. and the responce from ppl get rude and more rude as time goes..

i know the search can find most of these answers.. but maybe a section should be set up that counts what questions get the most.. so ppl can search those areas..

kinda like this:

how do i change a command?
how do i change rules of trammel?
how do i set a hue?

so ppl can look with out havin to post the same questions.. it would be alot of work im sure.. but in the long run ppl would stop gettin so frustrated with the same questions over and over.. and posting such rude replys..

**Waits for the burn**

What you just proposed has been said as many times as the questions have been asked. There used to be and I dont know if its still here as I havent had to look at it in a long time a FAQ section that had many answers in it. This may no longer be here like i said I havent looked for it and I never scroll down pasr script submissions anymore haha

Less n00bie questions! w00t! No, wait...we'll still have the same problem. People not looking for the information themselves >_<

I have noticed also that alot of the same questions get asked alot and I have noticed that there are some that get very rude. There are new people coming to this forum all the time so it is only normal to get the same questions over and over. I think I read it correctly when I came to this area of the forum and it is called "new Join Forum and I think I also read "So your new to RunUO and looking to work with people that are new, this is the place.". I would quess with this said that maybe the problem isnt new people with question but maybe the same old peaple giving rude answers. Everyone is diffrent and learn in diffrent ways, some do it by being lead in the right direction and some learn from other showing them the way, that will never change. You can't force people to learn or understand something the way you might, so you have 2 choices either help them in a way thay can understand or dont help at all. My own experiences here I found that most of the time that I do a search I find the same question as mine but most of the time the only answer given is a rude comment and no answers, so I spend my time seaking out the few nice ones in the group and ask for help that way and I am thankful to them for all there help. I feel it is a shame that is what I have had to doit that way. By the way this wasnt a flame just hoping maybe a few of the rude ones will take sometime to see threw someone else eyes for once. Something else to remeber is some of these peaple maybe kids and they deserve a chance also, cause I know the shard I work on with several others is owned by a 16 year old boy with learning disabilitys who wants to be a programmer someday, now do you think this young man who has a hard time reading is going to be able to come here and even understand half the answers given? Everyone is diffrent and everyone deserve a chance.

Documenting a changing system is difficult. I can understand both sides of the issue and my own experimentation has led me into more than a few traps.

One thing that used to be here is a FAQ forum, anyone who felt like it could write a FAQ on any RunUO-related topic. Unfortunately with the rapid development cycle, FAQs would often become obsolete and the posts often didn't get maintained. I know there is a system in the works to replace the FAQ forum but that doesn't help people who have questions right now. (on a related note, http://www.schtuff.com/ is offering a free 200mb wiki-style knowledge base thingy. It seems like a wiki-style knowledgebase would be great for RunUO, though of course I'm sure the admins could set up their own. =)

Another method of helping new users were the stickies, unfortunately they suffer from the same batch of problems. (links that aren't valid, that lead to long-gone threads or programs that don't exist anymore, lack of maintenace, and since they're threads anyone can post to they get cluttered quickly, among others.)

I'd happily help contribute to the documentation and I know others would.

It seems like the only course of action now is for all users to contribute useful answers to questions they feel they *could* answer. (So take a look through the Script Support, New Join, and General Discussion forums and answer what you can? =)

The problem with search ........

1 - Us noob's don't know what we are searching for. I wanted hirable NPC's and tried the following words (hirable)(npc)(paladin)(hirable NPC) (hirable paladin)(Trinsic hirables) The garbage that came up was insane. And I was told when asking on the forums about it - do a search - funny fucking answer beings I spent over an hour doing just that.
2 - Anytime I search I pull up countless threads that ask the same question that I am asking and almost all have the same answer - do a search. I have found threads with 4 and 5 responses - all the same - search - have you tried a search.

It's insaine to think there are some people almost never answer a question out right, but seem to enjoy themselves in responding REPEATEDLY with "Do a search."

Why the fuck would anyone even respond to others threads by telling them to search. The most basic computer users all know there is a search button on every forum - so quit answering threads unless you give them the answer - and do a search isnt the answer that helps no one.

I have been building my own shard for almost 8 months now - I always search - and I can sometime find what I am looking for - but sometimes I cant - and when I can't I just know some asshole is going to tell me to do a search.

You might want to do a search on doing searches (sounds pompous) /sarcasm

I agree. The rules state that you shouldn't simply tell someone "search for it", you should give them a link to a thread, and then say "I found this with the search function."...if you're evil like that. Anyway...there's my 1.5 cents.

I've found the 'search' function to return a lot of unrelated threads. If you're searching for "swamp" for example, ANY thread where someone even MENTIONS the word "swamp" is going to come back. You can narrow it down by restricting your search to titles only, or trying variations on the word you're searching for. (Hirables may not return anything useful, the package I have is called "Hirelings")

It's right up there in the Community Rules (Ironically right below the rule saying to search before asking a question) "5. "Do a search" is not a proper response, so don't use it when someone asks for help."

The problem is the rule is relatively new and that a lot of older threads still have that as a response. In addition, forum upgrades over the years have wiped things out, so that what was a commonplace answer/reference thread in a FAQ forum or whatever is now long-gone. So searching may only yield up threads with "do a search" - your best bet in this case is to start a new thread in the appropriate forum, and SAY you did a search and only got "do a search" threads.

To rip from a great baseball movie and modify it for the intent of my response here, here it is

"If you build it, they still won't come."

We had one. We still had the same problem.

After ranting - I also have to say this.....

RunUO is by far one of the most informative forums I have EVER seen. I have been using the internet so long I remember searching on "Salt Lake City, Utah" once and getting less than 30 responses.

So... hats off to all the people that have made this forum the best source of information on UO and private shards that has ever been or ever will be.

Thanks again to everyone.
