What notebook/tablet uses the least amount of power and is compatable with UO? I am trying to figure out If it possible to run a server and clients with solar energy.

this is a dumb question but... Why would you want to run a a UO shard on a Laptop? just curious.

If you're looking currently, go for Pentium M, Core Solo, or Core Duo... though Core Duo will consume more than the previous two options (it's dual core). On AMD's side, there's the Sempron CPUs. If I remember correctly, they consume even less power than Intel's offerings, though I'd have to confirm that. If you can wait a couple months, look into the Core 2 Duo series that will be appearing. The Merom core CPUs (Core 2 Duo) are rumored to have a power consumption of only 35 watts. Intel is also going to be releasing "ultra low voltage" versions that consume only 14 watts. |

I'd just like to say I don't recommend running a RunUO Server on a laptop. For development purposes one of our testservers is on my laptop and this is ok for test/development purposes but I would not want to run a live shard on it.
Laptops have not been designed to run 24/7. Yes it will be fine for a while but you will quickly reduce the quality of your battery/cooling/power supply unit. They will get *hot*. Besides this, a desktop is cheaper and you can run it just fine with your generator. You can build a desktop/server with relatively low power usage as well, have far more effective cooler and a much better efficiency. |

If you really want dual CPU with dual cores, go Opteron or even go with the new Woodcrest core Xeons that Intel has just released. They beat even the Opterons for low power consumption. The dual core Opterons are 95W each while the dual core Woodcrest Xeons are 65W each. Of course, for low power consumption, your best bet is NOT going multi-CPU at all.... go with a SINGLE CPU. I'm confused as to why you insist on dual CPU when you clearly do not need it. I am referring to the other thread you started where you asked what kind of system you would need and unless your specs have changed, to support a max of around 40 to 50 users on the fastest DSL connection you could get (heck even on a T1), you would need no more than an AMD Athlon X2 processor at most. Why the insistance on Dual CPU? Have you found other uses for your server besides RunUO? If so, then it might be understandable, if not, you'd be wasting your money... though if you've got the extra few thousand to throw away that a dual CPU system would cost you over an AMD Athlon X2 system, then the choice is yours. Just remember, multi-CPU is NOT cheap and there really is no such thing as a truly low power multi-CPU rig. |
