Default When is a post too 'old' to be responded to?

Often when people post questions they are directed to search for answers. However, many times answers are in older posts and do not apply to newer versions of runUO, or if someone does post their questions in an older thread they are told not to bump old posts. This seems very contradictory and not particularly helpful.

Another problem occurs when several people have similar releases, often containing much of the same content. One particular example that has been driving me crazy is with all of the different spell systems. It is hard to know where to turn when wanting to sort some of this out, hence my initial question.

I am trying hard, but I am still a newbie.

It's best to post in the most recent thread. MOST if not all of the SpellSystem's are NOT RC2 compatible and would be tough to convert.

Now to answer to the best of my ability. Typically I won't post in any thread that is more then 3 months old, unless I missed it the first time around and am having an issue. Just look at the last page of posts and see when they where at. If the Original Poster was active throughout the thread it's likely that they are still trying to support that version and posting in an Older thread MAY get them to try to update it to the newest version of RunUO. If the OP isn't active and hasn't been anywhere on the boards in a while then they may be MIA or taking a break from RunUO and scripting and it may be a LONG time before any support is offered.

It depends. Necroing as a whole is frowned upon, however there are instances where it can be useful. If you have new information for a thread, an upgrade or a fix to a script long since abandoned by its original author, its actually a GOOD thing to necro the original thread with a link to your script or fix for it. If people jump on you for that, screw them.

Thank you both for the excellent answers. They should be added to the board FAQ

Also, thanks Greystar, for the heads up on the spells systems.
