compile/optimization - RunUO

When making a custom core, asside from the coding itself, what are important steps/settings to use to make sure the compiled exe is fully performance optimized? Is it as easy as just compiling or is there more to it then that? I got it all setup so I can compile and have a working exe, but I'm just wondering if more has to be done for full performance.
