this doesnt directly pretain to core or suggestions, its purely an idea to kick around.
I was reminiscing back to when i played on OSI about how i ran across server lines to the next sub-server. Then i started thinking about facets. Theoretically, you could indeed use facets to simulate sub-servers or "regions" of a larger world map. a standard map is 6144x4096. if you used a photo editor to create a map that is 12288 * 8192, then portion it into 4 sections, you could theoretically place teleporters on the edge of the map to force the players onto the next map portion (facet). One point not to forget is that forcing a player in a boat over a body of water might be a problem. Its just an abstract idea i have been kicking around that i thought i would share. |

Eh? You can already create multiple facets, they can only use the three client maps, though. And the client maps are locked into a certain size by the actual client. Teleporters would just have to carry the players to a different Map, much like Trammel/Malas/etc.

so if this is true then could you create 3 shards on your local LAN (for example), one for Trammel and Malas and Ilshenar?
That would be pretty good if you have fully spawned maps..

Nix, if the emulator supported that then yes. Unfortunately its so impratical that it would never be supported.
What nix is asking, is for multi-server shards based on facets rather than serverlines. What Jarrod is asking is theoretically possible, although the "black space" and "infinite water" comes into play. You wouldn't see the other side of the map because according to the client, its not in the same universe. |
