Default New installer in 1.0

Well I suppose I should start by asking what is the purpose of the installer? Sorry, but I found it annoying. I had to go through 10 extra steps just to extract the files to the folder I wanted which on my server is the D drive. I get the feeling that it will never happen but can you guys please lose the installer.

Even better idea, keep the installer, in two flavors, and add a zip option.

One installer that includes the .NET framework, and one that does not. Make the one with the .NET framework appear to be the suggested download, you know for those people who cannot read install directions.

For the people more familiar with RunUO, continue to release a .zip version.

I am sure the RunUO team has already thought about most of this, but since version 1.0 is not out of Beta yet, and the installer methods need to be tested, I have no problems dealing with the added installer steps.

Besides, it is easy to tell the installer to put the files somewhere other than default.
I do this with most things I install anyway so it is no big issue.

The instaler is for the users that have issues with following directions and like installing the framework.

Its not going to be used, so get over it :-)

Cool

The only problem I had was after I installed it and tried to run the shortcut on the desktop, it tried to reinstall it or something. I just shut that down and then the shortcut worked. The installing was still doing something funky in the background(not being very nice to my proccessor) so I just restarted and it's been cool since.

If this is what the dev team really thinks then I disagree with this assessment! If a person "chooses to be lazy enough that they can't read a few lines of text" then they should be left to dwindle in there own ignorance.

Sorry, but I have this really serious problem with helping people of such indolence.

BTW. The second I finished installing 1.0 I was over it.

See thats where the Dev Team and you disagree.

They feel that everyone should be able to have a chance to use RunUO. The installer allows this.

Get over it, its not going any place. Ryan talked about it for weeks by a whole month before rc0 was released. So trust me its not going any place.

Yeah, I agree. The new install feature is terrible. I used to love the fact that RunUO would be so easy to unpack. I used to be able to mess up a script and replace if from the .zip again. Now I've actualy gotto make backups of the script in an awkward way.

You can backup the original scripts yourself. Its not that big of a deal.

if you are one of the professionals who wants to EXTRACT the files instead of installing it, you should also be professional enough to read how MSI works.
If you want to extract the files, then do a network install by simply going the the command prompt and browse to the directory where the installer MSI file resides. Then type msiexec.exe -a "RunUO Setup.msi" and hit enter. This will show you a network installation dialog and lets you specify the folder where you want the setup to be "extracted". (It will still include an installer, but stores the files OUTSIDE the msi file, so it is possible to copy/access them WITHOUT running the installer)

Basicly

Installer = good if people actually do some research.

actually it was confusing for me to install runUO with this installer thingie.. I mean what does it do ? does exactly same as unzipping but makes it more complicated... plus, I dunno how it managed, but it gave me some funky error (sorry forgot to record it :/ ) but alltogether I have less problems unzipping something. also as someone mentioned before, if you for whatever reason need a original file, you can just extract the single file from the zip - not possible (or at least I don't know how) with ze installer.

The installer is so people can now freely distribute RunUO 1.0 from their websites if they want. If you go back to the .zip, you cannot do that anymore.

I for one, and there are others out there too, can't use the new runuo because of the installer. All I get is an error message right towards the end of the install process. Only thing it allows me to then is uninstall what has already been installed.

I have posted my error before and no one seemed able to help, so Ive resigned myself to not being able to use the new and improved runuo. At least not until another way has been listed to get it (hopefully a zip file *hint Hint*).

Well thats my two cents worth.

Since this is a forum for suggestions i would like to reemphasize that the installer would be alot better if it had the option to choose your install path, versus the installer choosing a default path for you. That being said.

As we all know, this is not the final version and it is the first version that came with an installer, so it should be expected that it wont suit all of our needs at first thats why we have a suggestions forum, so we may all discuss how to make it better for the community as a whole.
