The fantasy genre is too limiting, who cares about consistency & themes when you can pretend to ride a Harley right?

Out of the way dragonriders *honk honk*

most of you will never have seen this, but anyways, it was a good movie

When I saw this I thought of the scene from the animated version of "a Knight in King Author's Court"
when the King and "Sir Boss" are about to be hung (they where out as peasants and no one knew who they where), the Knights of the Round Table come riding up on motorcycles (that "Sir Boss" had designed) with lances in hand

Absolutely. But, since my shard is partly steampunk, partly horror, and fantasy for the rest, i wanted to know just to stop salivating

Steampunk fantasys can be fine *cough* Eberron *cough*.
But you are aiming for a world where using steam to power machines is acceptable and regularity preformed. It is completely unlike building a single type of a [s]precise internal combustion engine that consumes refined fossil fuel and rides on a certain type of rubber[/s] then tossing all of that out the window to exclaim it's magic so nyeh!.

who says it runs on fossil fuel, it uses 4 magicaly enhanced hamsters in wheel cages

anyways though, it can be explained that it uses magics to make it move, and phoenix feathers are regularly consumed, or what ever -- what looks like the engine is not realy an engine but a storage compartment or part of the support for holding the person up -- the exhaust pipes are lance holders or what ever
the ruber tires are actualy made from dragon skins stuffed very tightly with some sort of special feathers, flax or shark guts or what have you

there is nothing that can not be done or explained when the imanination takes over

except things like that, lol...
really, best explaination for this is: "it's cool, put it in" "but... it cannot fit the setting!" "don't worry, place it like it has been there forever, players will explain it easily: they like cool things!"

*quick googling*
oh, D&D setting.
i hate D&D. i won't even read a line more about eberron.

I love paid developers, since they can do things like that and survive it.

WoW is pretty full of steampunk technology and other various kinds, not just motorcycles.

Submarines, trains, zeppelins, pump stations, guns, teleporters, rockets and so on. Can't really say it's against the setting.

thilgon, you need to keep in mind that per Ultima Lore:

there are moongates that allow instantaneous travel based on the phases of the moon

time travel

space ships

alternate universes

how can a universe have a spaceship and time-travel, and you want to complain about motorcycles????

srsly?

To be fair.
Moongates != advanced technology nor were the moongates 'crafted' by anyone.

Time Travel was part of LBRs plot and after UO ditched Richard. Enough said. Also an acceptable part of the fantasy genre.

Space Ships were never validated. As Richard Garriott later noted, he wanted to add as much to the disk as possible without really thinking about unity of theme.

Alternate Universes; See UO's intro movie. See also every OSI server for context. Also planar travel is very much tied in with the fantasy theme.

Give it a read through anyway. Eberron successfully brings trains and airships to a fantasy theme. It lacks the bullshit like a magically powered engine turning wheels to move thuse posing no questions of why would you do that. Instead it uses stuff like bound elementals as the engine to make the object fly though the air.

Instead of forgetting a combustion engine requires discovery of electricity and thus powered lighting for all being passed up on. Eberron's consistency awards people with variant everburning torches as a commonly owned item.

And so on.

Probably. Never could get very far into the games and Doom was so much cooler.

Not that it matters too much. Of the four points 3 are general enough it doesn't matter. As for teh spaceship part, that is a Ultima I based comment. Do space ships continue to appear in later games?

i have played from 4 and on (including both underworlds)
and no spaceships
but there was a ballon wiith a magical fan for steering it (changes the direction of the wind, but yet you are in a basket under the ballon holding it lol) - forgot how they made the gas for it though
and a mouse that could fight like the rest of every one else on the team
black powder and muskets
flying carpets - wonder what powers their engine and gives them antigravitational support
an ogre or ettin or soomething else liek that that wanted a reciepe for split pea soup or something simular lol
gargoyles, but no elves
virgin detector
having sex
(ultima 7b and 9 -- and in 7b if you played a girl - the dancer was still the guys wife that tried to seduce you
and in 9 as an "easter egg" if you drank a bottle of serpent wine just before getting the hooker, nice change for when you woke up - it is funny)
and a magical system that seemed to change with almost every game

and a few other weird things, been so long since i played the games, can't remember everything

and to keep on topic, no motorcycles where in there

Ok so Ultima 4~9 lack spaceships. Ultima 1 had then for sure and RG is noted for wanting to squeeze as many things into one game without caring about a theme. That leaves 2 & 3 that may or may not have them.

UO:LBR did add golems and the exodus area. Plot line for that I recall had Lord British trying to merge the shards and instead the past (Illshenar) and the future (exodus) were brought forth. No space ships, no space theme, just magically powered (yes magic, not steam or gasoline) artifacts.

Squared up now?

P.S. It bears saying, again. Planar travel is originally fantasy theme. Less Syfy watching, more book reading please.

and also the mini-shapes... those were described as wormholes per lore which is sci-fi reference.
