Default connecting problem

i took my laptop over to my college to try the wirless network there....got on the internet and all but when i tried to get on my UO server...it gave the "couldn't connect to ultima online...please try later"

i get home.....the server is fine...i can connect to it fine....is there anything i am doing wrong or is it the way they have their network set up??

It might.

You do understand college networks have a firewall. They setup their network so students can connect to the internet and use common applications. But 90% of the students use it for studying.

So yes it could be their setup.

i thought that a firewall kept the computer from auto accepting stuff from the net...but if a computer asks for the such saif file or packet that it would still go through

is there anything on my laptop i can actually check to see if it is just their firewall stuff?

A properly set up firewall will also prevent anything unauthorized from going out.

As to what you can check from your laptop, there may be a tool, but I'm not aware of it. The best bet would be to talk to somebody there that is involved in their system administration.

Quantos is absolutely correct. There was a time that a typical firewall configuration defaulted to allow outbound conversations, but that is long past. Firewalls now end with a default "Deny All" rule, meaning if a communication is not specificly allowed, it is blocked.
