Is there a proper way to shut down server?

I got a server up and running yesterday and began placing items/decorating. When I shut down the server I just just clicked the "X" to close on the window.

When I started the server up today, the character I created was gone as were all the items I placed.

The world was saving regularly.

What did I do wrong? Please help. Thanks.

[X] is fine usually, but I prefer to use [admin, and Shutdown with Save from there.

If you are using RunUO RCO 1.0, when you restart the server, make sure you use the actual .exe in the RunUO install folder. If you just use the shortcut that the installation creates, it repairs the server back to a basic RunUO 1.0 Installation. Otherwise, just using X does work, but it makes it better to do what psz said, that way the server is saved right as it shuts down and you don't lose any progress since the last save.

Or just Type [save before you hit the [X]

But I too personally prefer to use psz's way.

one more way is to type [save and then exit uo while the server is running and once back to your desktop select the server and press ctrl c this will close the server just like hitting the x but most will agree that the admin menu shut down with save is the best way

I don't know if anyone brought this up, but ingame you can use the [admin gump to save and shutdown safely.
