Default Strange [unfreezemap results!

I let my [unfreezemap command run on my test shard yesterday. It started at about 3pm is my guess and it must have finished about 9pm or so. Is it normal to take so long? I only had 512M memory on the server.

This morning, I copied the files over to my uogateway and logged in to see the results. I got quite a surprise!

Below is Brit Bank Tram and the river where the bridge was! I did not do any wipe. The unfreeze did this all by itself.

Click on a picture to see it full size.

Is this the normal result of an [unfreezemap command? If not, what did I do wrong? Most of the buildings were gone and all of the water too. I did not do a [wipe, but it looked like I had.

This is a total guess on my part but could it be when you unfroze them they were no longer static so they decayed?

I don't think so. From my understanding, it takes statics and converts them to locked-down, dynamic items. My understanding could be wrong, as I am pretty new to this, but that seems to be what the message says when you perform the cmmand.

If I had to guess I would say you either got the wrong statics files or the ones you got were corrupted somehow. Unfreezing a map should never have this eefect on the world. It appears that all the statics are missing from the file

ddi you copy the save files over also?

because when you unfreeze them, they are then in the save files as regular objects (may be static, but still just objexts)

So if you did not bring the save over - no items where brought over

Yes, I copied the files over to my uog directory and renamed them so gateway would recognize them.

which files? once you unfreeze them, they are no longer in a file that uog uses - they are not in the statics file, they are in the items save file on the server itself in the runuo directory

if you want to transfer them to a diferent server best bet is to do this:

place those static file on the server (even if you have to close it down for a bit)
unfreeze the items you want to keep there
save
close server
replace origional static files back
restart server
then the items should be in there with the origional static files you all ready did

I followed the tutorial by Freya. It's here somewhere. And it did not mention anything about items save file on the server itself in the runuo directory.

What we want to do is modify some of the stock buildings and freeze it back to statics. If you can't see the buildings after an unfreeze, how could you modify them? Is there a command we are missing that puts the items back in place as dynamic modifiable items?

if on the same shard only:

unfreeze them (should still see the items)
do a world save
shut down server
make new patches and get them in place to your client (UOG, etc )
restart server

they should still be there, but now are selectable

what i said before was to transfer them to a different shard (like a test shard to live shard)

and freezing them - should make them disapear from you until you get new patches in

And that is exactly what I did. That's why I was shocked to see all the buildings gone. This did take about 6 hours to do the unfreeze.

hummm - 6 hours - that is a little long for it to do it unless you have once very slow computer
(AMD 3k 1gig ram - unfreezing malas with all of my custom towns in there took less than 3 minutes)

I wonder if you are unfreezing to much stuff, unfreezing all of tram might be to much memory usase and stuff is getting lost during it

here is what i do sometimes - might be easier

find the NE corner of what you want to unfreeze - make a teleporter, set it movable - set it to that spot and place it in your pack (like for brit - past the stables closr to blackthoirns castle)
then go to the SW corner of what you want to unfreeze, place the teleporter on the ground there (like the BS shop just over the bridge in brit)

type [unfreeze - target the ground there - step on teleporter - taking you to other spot, and then clcik on the ground again

this way only that section is unfrozen

worth a try

Yeah, I think I have come to that conclusion. It was just too much for my pc and it only has 512K memory. That is the test server. Our production server has 1 Gig, but from what I was, 2 Gig would be nice.

I did a successful area unfreeze as you mentioned and it worked fine. I just did a building in trammel and I noticed that 2 files were change. The strange thing about the map freeze was that only 1 file changed, so something was lost as my pc was paging to disk!

the best way to tell which 2 files are changed (and will be same 2 each time - just the "number" at the end will change based on the map) is by sorting by date modified

just buy size - it might not chage enough to notice for the one file - it is just a "pointer" file telling everything where to go - so it is always much much smaller

but glad you got it working

(i would suggest putting copies the live servers files back in 1st before trying any other stuff)

Yes, that's what I looked at the file dates. I knew from the tutorial which two to look at, and the time it did not work well, only the one file date had changed.

Yes, I put it all back the way it was, so my test server is still a good copy of the production shard.

Thanks for all your input Greywolf! I had one more question, since you seem to have some experience with this.

When we decide to unfreeze an area on the production shard, would there be any problem with unfreezing the area sometime in the evening and waiting until our reboot the next day to actually shutdown the shard and make our copies for gateway? We obviously could not work on the unfreezed area until after we did do the copy. I'm just trying to come up with a plan to do this with the minimum of downtime for the shard.

you do not even have to reboot the server at all

you can copy the files from the server with out shutting it down, just can not replace them with out shutting down

so you can make your patch files right after the unfreeze, and send them to your "storage" url for them, update UOG (if needed - if the rar file is same name - then just updating the actual file will fix it instantly)

then just let everyone know that there has been a patch update (using MOTD or what ever)

i constantly do freezing and unfreezing in areas i am building and just update the patch, restart my client, etc with out having to restart the server to see the changes
