Default Clients can't connect in Win98 SOLVED 2 NIC card issue

This is a long story but I'll make it short. Had the server running in Win2k but my machine liked to reboot itself whenever it felt the whim. So I rebuilt my machine, hoping this would solve my mysterious reboot problems. Well my Win2k CD is trashed I can't get it installed so I'm back to Win98.

I'm on a cable modem connected to the computer that I'm running the server on, with Win2k I would start up and everything just worked, people could connect over the internet/internal etc...

Now with Win98 the server starts up "looks the same as the Win2k startup same IP address also" and I can only connect locally on my internal network. No-one can connect from the internet.

I tried a couple of changes in that Sticky "How to get clients to connect." but nothing is working. If you could help that would be great.

Everyone tring to connecting is running 4.0.0E client and using UoGateway 1.5, this all worked before when I was on Win2k. So the only things that have changed are my OS and the version of RunUO. On Win2k I was running Beta22, now I'm running Beta23r2 on Win98. Also I have moved back to the original Serverlist.cs file because I messed with it. So if you give me a suggestion I have the original Serverlist.cs file to work from.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Post your IP

Do you have a router, If you do did you forward the port you plan on using?

If you have a router, please edit the ServerList.cs and in make the static variable ( not the one inside the comments ) but the one that has a null value make that equal to your the IP you posted.

IP Address is : xx.xxx.xxx.xxx

As for the question do I have a router. Honestly I don't know. Is a cable modem considered a router? Anyway here is how my machine is hooked up. Internal 10baseT NIC hooked into the back of the cable modem, Cable modem connected to the Cable line. I didn't think the cable modem was a router, but I guess I really don't know anymore. My IP Address is DHCP but they don't force a change for 3 months or more so its pretty static but will change every once in awhile.

Sorry I know its hard to help a person that doesn't know the answers to your questions. Lets hope I have given you enough info.

Thanks Phantom for tring to help. What I don't understand is why when I was running Win2k I didn't have to edit the Serverlist.cs file at all. But now running Win98 I'm going to have to. /boggle Yes I know different OS but still, would like to have to consistancy with some of this stuff but of course everyone has a different setup. Makes consistancy alittle hard. Any help is much appriecated.

Do you have 2 computers using the same line? If you don't then you don't have a router.

I could not even login, don't post your ServerList.cs I don't think thats your problem.

Do you have a firewall? Honestly I can ping your IP unless you don't have runuo running...

Technically I do have 2 machines on one line. But I do it differently, then you might think.

Main Box has 2 NIC cards in it. 1st NIC is for the Cable modem. 2nd NIC is for Internet Connection sharing. I put the 2nd NIC card into a D-Link hub and plug the 2nd machine into that hub also, I'm able to use both machines on the internet without getting hit for extra $$$ for having multiple IP's from my ISP. I am able to hit my server over the local LAN connection. But no-one from internet can play on it.

When the server starts up. I have 3 IP Addresses that come up.
1st:127.0.0.1:2593
2nd:xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:2593
3rd:198.168.0.1:2593

Yes the server went down probably when you we're attempting to log in. I was tring to get it back up. I currently have it running right now.

Also taking about the Internet Connection Sharing I suppose that could be the problem. That is easy to elimate as a problem I'll uninstall it in a couple of hours and see if anyone can hit me then. But for right now I have the server up, but I don't think you will be able to get to it no-one else has been able to. Also I don't have a firewall setup. Yes now you know why I been going crazy, I didn't want to post up here I was having problems I like to solve them myself but its been bugging me to days now. Hopfully I'll figure it out with some hints from you guys. I'll definately get rid of the ICSharing later tonight, just to eliminate that as possible problem.

Thanks for your assistance.

I am almost certain thats your problem. I can ping it, which means I should be able to login.

You need 2000 Pro, 98 Blows...

UGHHHH must be a Win98 problem with multiple NIC's.

I uninstalled Internet Connection Sharing. Got my 2nd machine up on a dial-up account to try hitting my Main box over the internet. Started up the server it still had 3 IP's that loaded
1st:127.0.0.1:2593 <-- local
2nd:xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:2593 <-- internet
3rd:168.xxx.xxx.xxx:2593 <-- internal IP garbage number for 2nd NIC

I used the 2nd machine dialed up and hit the server, but it died at the character screen it wouldn't let me get to the character screen. I had another player hit my box same problem he couldn't get into the character screen either. Hmm progress I thought to myself. So I disabled the 2nd NIC card, started up the server, now only 2 IP's
1st:127.0.0.1:2593 <-- local
2nd:xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:2593 <-- internet

I used the 2nd machine dialed up and hit the server, and got into the game. Oh boy it worked but boy this knocks my other machine off my internet connection, which is not really an option. Now I have to find another solution. Man o Man I wish I could get my Win2k CD to work, I can't get it installed on my box keeps complaining about bad files. Sigh, this just hasn't been a good week.

Well thanks for your help Phantom, I'm not sure I would have ever come to the conclusion that ICS could mess it up. Well honestly I don't even think its ICS, what it must be is Win98 having issues with 2 NIC cards.

purchasing a router is cheaper than 2 nics? I dont think so... 2 nic cards in 1 comp, is routing via software instead of firmware. I wouldn't think win 98 would be really good for that but i can say i have never tried it. There has to be another answer to this problem. This works with the other emu's hence it has to be something simple *crosses fingers*.

A router costs ~$40-$50.

A NIC costs ~$20.

It's about the same, really.

BUT the Router allows you WAY more options in terms of configuration, as well as better protection from hacking.

Personal Oppinion
I had 98se on a DSL connection 3 years ago, and I used the Two NIC method to share connections to other computers (Win9x, linux, etc)... It worked... Ok. Nothing great, and I had to be DAMNED sure that machine was on 24/7 AND configured correctly. I also had to use software firewalls, which I personally don't like.

I was just giving you a suggestion.

If you want to make it a really good setup, take the leap of trying those new wireless routers

Although I am not sure if it will cause a problem, better not.

Default I am ahving the same Porblem

What i learned thouh is if you disable your local network ( i runxp and can do that ) and keep your net connection it works fine for ppl on the net and the host machine, of course now any computers connected to youof the LAN cannot connect to the internet or your game because you have disabled your local Network, so this basically will allow you to let net gamers join (i also took down my fire wall) but if you have sibblings or parents or signifigant others that deman there net acces this can be a burden sometimes.. Hope that bit of info helps a little.
