It made UO. Thats it. It gave us this lifestyle, of sitting here for hours on end, being our computers into a pulp. Without OSI, where would we be?
mmm on second thought, maybe that is a bad thing.

To be honest with you, the original people who made UO, I really wonder how many of them are still working there. The last few expansions if you ask me have been very cheap. Poorly animated, didn't even TRY to make it fit in with the rest of the game. They could be doing so much better but they had to go and get hooked up with those money-sucking ******* at EA. And if they hadn't, chances are we would be in the same place with some other game. So basically I'm trying to say that in the absence of UO there will only be something else to occupy that dear time with. Even if it weren't for OSI and UO, I'd still be sitting here for hours on end. Nothing much different other than the games I'd play I guess. =\ |

Heh no sorry, I know what a MUD is, I mean though, these things have been around far before any UO and even "Meridian 59" So I would have to say that it was MUD's that started it all, from MUD's it just grew into what we now call "MMO" and it has many more branches of genres .... |

Then maybe I wouldn't have to explain. It was easy enough to understand had you just read it clearly. |

MUD != MMORPG
The MM == MULTI MEDIA Thus MOOs/MUCKs/MUDs != MMORPG (Just clarifying)

MM = Massivly Multiplayer, not MultiMedia. And you could ask, if Meridian59 is so massivly multiplayer (aprox. 100 players on a server at the same time), so UO was the first game with really many players on the same world.

psz do you know what a MUD is? They were Multiplayer games, even role playing games. As I said before, these I think gave birth to something bigger, massively multiplayer games.... No one said anything about MUD == MMORPG.... |

Yes, I know what a MUD is. I was running MUDs when most people were on 28.8 modems. Note: I said I *RAN* them. Not played them. As in, admin kinda stuff. So please, stop saying I don't know what they are.
I've also run MUCKs, MOOs, GraphicalMUDs, Telnet-IRC RPGs, Text-Based (infocom style) multiplayer games, etc. BBS RPGs on the C64 existed as far back as 1985 (Probably sooner than that, given the C64's 300 baud modem was out in 1982) As for MM, you are correct. My brain had a miagrain induced brain-fart when I wrote that :-P Thought about it when I got to work yesterday, forgot about it when I got home :-> However, I'd still not quantify 99% of MUD/MUCK/MOOs as MMORPGs. Most lacked the MM (Multi Media *OR* Massively Multiplayer), most lacked the depth. The 2 or 3 that had both were quite rare. It would be like saying GEOS for the C64 gave birth to Windows, because both are GUIs, and GEOS was more widely used first. However, that's were the similarities stop. GEOS, though popular on the C64, NEVER came CLOSE to the user base or functionality of Windows. Same with 99% of all MUD/MUCK/MOOs vs. EQ/UO/WoW (And yes, MMORPG has been used as MultiMediaOnlineRPG in the past, mostly to refer to GraphicalMUDs in the mid 1990s)
