Default Pre-built vs. Custom Build, Vendor vs. Do-it-yourself

I know everyone has a dream rig but I was just curious what other people think of as their dream rig? I personally prefer to custom build my own system since I can't find a vendor that can make on to my specs for a price I'm willing to pay.

It really all depends on what the vendors have for sale, and what you want. If you want something so... rare(For lack of a better word) You're best off making it yourself, if you have the skillz. If not, you're SOL... lol. Anyways, i'd perfer custom built w/vendor parts, so you know that if it doesn't work right, you can send it back. All depends on what you really need.

custom built from newegg, most parts come with a minimum of 1year warranty, if something breaks just rma it

why pay for dell to put together a rig with low quality parts when you can use the same low quality parts for half the price ;/

Building your own machine can be more expensive if you don't buy the right parts and don't buy from the right place ( ie they won't accept returns ).

Sometimes your better of paying the extra money to have somebody build it and also have that wonderful warrenty incase something happens like you spill your soda/beer on your computer. They do that with laptops, not sure about desktop, I am sure you can get warrenty that covers it.

You also are given support if you require it, and also will know exactly what you have bought. This also allows you to do small updates to your machine since they have the history also. They can work with you, and you can get "dealer" deals like free printers like dell offers.

You get slightly less quality but remember today a computer will last 3 years before the high-end applications/games start to be unusable.

I have done all three, bought a low quality machine, I built my own only having to scrap the project because of unknown issue with Windows 95, and bought a high-end computer from a company ( custom build ).

The low quality machine actually still works, its an hp I believe. The high-end computer was over priced, but it still works, but thats thanks to my 128 video card :-)

If you order from a company, be sure you buy extra RAM then you need, in my case I am unable to get the brand they used, thus unable to add more RAM because of configuration issue.

My set up is custom, and after seeing the horrors that some people have with pre-built rigs, I wouldn't have it any other way.

$1200 bucks gets UT2k4 to say holy shit.

That is all I ask for.

it really all depends on what you're looking for. if you want a "drop-in" box, that all you have to do is buy it and wait for it to come in, then by all means buy a pre-built job (NEVER a dell. those guys suck...more than glad to post why elsewhere). if, on the other hand you wish to have a fully custom job, and want to know exactly where every part came from and how high/low quality it is, then you're stuck building it yourself. i always prefer buying pieces from my company (owner discount ftw), or newegg before that. the rig i'm on now is running the same specs as the REALLY high-end Dell as far as ram/hd/video/proc/etc, but cost me about 600$, and i'm not using a single off-brand part.

No I didn't I actually spent almost a year researching parts. And when it came down to it the Radeon 9800pro was sold out so I got the All-in-wonder version.

heh.

I had trouble finding a Radeon x800Pro, also. Found it at this unknown site for $395 ($5 less than NE or ZZF, AND free shipping). Got it pretty fast. Was pleased with that.

I find this funny, cuz I got a del Optiplex dual pent 4 2.7 gightz processor w/ 512 megs ram, and a 60 gig HD for free. Granted, the video card was shit, but for 65$ for a new video card, I think its worth it.

Oh yeah, I got this from a school, it was really busted up. The processor/motherboard worked, and I got some ram from another one that was REALLY busted, beyond repair. All in all, good pre-built comp=free.

The joy of having a mother as a school teacher, and a father as a comp system repair dude.

Default I did a little pricing

I went on a few web sites and threw together a custom built rig and realized that I'll have to build my own rig by hand. Right now I'm hoping to build one with the following.

AMD Athalon 64 FX-55 processor (unless I can get the newest AMD dual core for a reasonable price)
Dual Nvidia 6800 ultra in SLI
Dual 500GB HDD in Raid 0
2 GB Memory
Dual DL DVD RW drives
9 in 1 card reader
I haven't decided on a sound card yet any suggestions?
