Default Windows Updates ..

I would like a fresh opinion (because they change with time) on windows XP updates ..

I'm reinstalling my computer security .. and now i'm wondering about the security updates .. should I update to SP 1 ? SP 2 ?

Is there a way to get the fixes without updating ?

Because I remember last time I installed SP 2.. it was a total nightmare for me (not the horse, but trouble .. :P).

Opinions please.

There is no reason you shouldn't install SP 2, infact if you want future secuirty updates you have to.

Well results seem to have varied from user to user (from what I read on the net). Some say it's great, others say not. From personnal experience SP2 slowed down my computer and made every program worse in benchmarks. It would automaticly reset options I would purposly modify (administrative tools, etc.) and I have no use for its firewall ..

Thats why I'm hesistant, I was wondering if new information was accumulated which could help one prevent sp2 from doing all these things (and explain why it crashes some pc's and let's others run better then before ..).

(edit)
Maybe there is an alternative for some fixes ? Because I only need avout 7 of them (worm fixes).

Greetings,

Yes, install SP2.

If you doing a fresh re-install (erasing the entire HD/OS and starting over), download SP2 before you get started.

Remove you Internet connection, load your OS, then install SP2, then connect your Internet and run the Windows Update. Make sure everything is patched and up to date before you start loading your programs. IMHO this is the best way to do it.

Clearly you have your views, so why are you asking for ours if your not going to listen to it?

There is no valid reason not to use SP 2

I have installed 1200 PCs with SP2 (both upgraded and from scratch) and only had 2 that failed (which both was very old installs)

I'd say its a must + quite safe.

I had no complaints about slowdowns, only people who can't figure out how to handle the new security settings.

I mean how can you notice a slowdown, when computers are already so fast?

Unless your dealing thats pushing its limits, don't worry about it is my view.

Not updating to SP2 is like having unprotected sex with a prostitute.

so...I have not updated to SP2 thousands of times.....
har har

There is no reason not to upgrade to SP2. Back in the day, there were some issues with software support, but unlses youre using homebuilt apps, the odds are its supported now. Mr T says : Dont be a foo', upgrade to SP 2!

We got PCs that push the machines to the limit and then some. No noticable difference compared to when they had SP1.

Smile Sp2...

I beta tested windows pro and home...trust me SP2 has the stable updates that the Windows update site cannot give...according to the techs on the beta testers only group, It is well in your best interest to update with 2.
