Exclamation Hijackers et al

The thread hijacking has long since gotten out of hand. People start a topic to have a decent discussion on that topic. The problem is that every single thread gets hijacked these days; the hijacks invariably spin out of control and end up in the gutter which results in threads getting deleted or closed and sometimes getting people banned.

We need to straighten up a bit folks. Don't blow up a good conversation just for the hell of it. And don't drag sex and drugs into every conversation. If you want a topic on sex and drugs then open one. If the thread is someone having a serious discussion, don't go in with your potty mouth either.

Some of the other mods have been far more aggressive about this in the past than I have, but I am afraid I am beginning to agree with them. Until we can have a decent conversation on a given topic I am going to be removing or editing a lot more individual posts; and possibly laying out more temporary bans.

I'm quite guilty of some of these things, but this is definitely needed.

Thanks David, for at least giving us the heads up and giving us a chance to change our behaviors.

When it is all said and done this is still Starbucks. I was not trying to kill all freeflowing conversation, just bring it back to something manageable. For a while litterally every single thread was a broad mix of two or three conversations between a half a dozen people. However we seem to be past that now. In my opinion the creator of the thread gets to set the tone. If he/she wants to keep it on topic then try to honor that.

If it were my web site, I don't think I'd really have Starbucks the way it is. Flames allowed, everything goes, blah blah. No.

First, the flames allowed thing: I don't think so. Be polite to everyone. Don't encourage community abuse by creating a place for it, for goshsakes.

Second, not everything goes: some things just aren't appropriate. What is or isn't "appropriate," I'll leave off. But some stuff just doesn't belong.

Right now, here, and frankly on other modding sites, there is often some place like Starbucks, and this degeneration of a thread due to "dogpile on the post" happens just because of the "hey you can do anything here," tude that the board itself encourages.

I'm not fond of that idea, myself.

Personaly I agree that there is a need for some kind of "this.moderated == false" just so people could vent some steam from their day to day stressfull lives.

However I also think that there should be some kind of "this.moderator == true && this.TalkAboutAnything == true" section.
Just to allow the people that want a civilized discussion over something that isn't "RunUO related" and want it to be monitored by the moderators so there won't be flaming everywhere.

Anyway, that's just my opinion as a member of the community

If ppl wouldn't hijack at all, there would be more seriously taken discussion?
There is some point to it.

No, but if there'll be some kind of "moderated starbucks" and "unmoderated starbucks" than you'll be able to have more seriously taken discussions there.
**checks if he can start the hijacking operation soon**

A turn in the conversation is one thing, starting a discussion on a whole new topic is quite another.
