you get a list of jobs you qualify for, based on your ASVAB test (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) you pick the job, and you are sworn that job. And as far as i know... if you are a marine, you most likely WILL go to the frontline, regardless of what your job is, depending on the scale of the war.
