That's not too bad considering all that is paid. Did you take language classes before you went or did you just jump right in? How many people speak English there?

I took a semester of Japanese at college. The rest I studied by myself over there. But then again I study very well by myself and I'm quite disciplined. I did a 2 month home stay over there, thats what got me talking fluently.
VERY few people talk English in Japan. You'll find better English speakers in North Korea (no joke).
