You need about 1000 in either to understand a newspaper. To read perfectly you need about 2000 in Japanese and 3000 in chinese. (Cantonese, mandarin and all other dialects use the same writing system btw). The japanese system technically stops at 1945 characters, but if you include archaic characters it goes higher (depending on how far you go). Chinese on the other hand will go up to 30 000 and some even say 60 000 when including archaic characters. Japanese people in average know between 2000-3000 characters and Chinese people rarely know above 6000 characters. Note that even if the characters are the same, the meanings are often slightly different in both languages. Yes, I'm studying both languages. I'm fluent in intermediate Japanese and basic Chinese. Fluency only came from living in both countries though.

Marmite is why England is no better than Australia. I also disprove the taste of Marmite. |

Would you rather be able to fly, or have the ability to read people's minds?

Would you rather slide down a 50 foot razor blade into a vat of alcohol, or be unable to sit for the rest of your life?
