Default Shard Success stories

Anyone wanna share? Would be nice to read about how did you came up with the idea and whether or not you have achieved what you wanted with it. Would love to read about mega shards like UOgamers or the other big ones I dont know . Or the small ones.

Thanks.

I don't think any shards actually succeed .

That might not be far from the truth... shard creation should be done for the art of it, not the "success" of it.

I think that lack of easy access is ruining the shard buisness for those who could other wise have a very successful shard. Sadly we all loose

What do you mean by easy access?

Setting up a shard is easy. Laborious, but easy.

More shards wouldn't help alot, though. This game is a very old game.

If you approach shard creation as a work of personal art, and not some kind of commercial enterprise, you'll have a much higher chance of being happier in the end.

My Shard is successful in that I have a goal for it. I mean, I want it to be a certain way and give players a certain feeling when they are playing on it. I've done that and every day it keeps getting better. It is successful in that it is well liked by great, although small at the moment, playerbase that has been built.

On another note:

I do agree somewhat with Sunshine's comment about shard's being easily accessible. With ConnectUO being down right now it is quite hard for a smaller shard to gain more players. Don't get me wrong, I love ConnectUO and I'll patiently wait until it is fully functional again. Until then I'll keep on repeating the process of getting it to work when someone see's that crash report when they load it up.

So for now, I have to depend mostly on voting sites to get publicity for my shard. I vote every day from two internet connections on 8 different voting sites. It helps some but you can't really count on players to vote even if they are completely devoted to your shard so it is hard to get to the tops of those lists.

I have also found MySpace somewhat helpful in attracting players. Make your shard a nice professional looking MySpace layout and you'll get some hits that way as well.

I created a shard once, long long ago on UOX3. It was UDIC members only.

It failed horribly.

Fast forward... I dunno... 5 years or so to RunUO Beta 6.
Re-opened the shard (Same name, no requirement).
Got a consistent online base of... 12.

Ryan liked it so much he... Had me copy it to his servers and called it UOGamers: Demise.

I consider that a personal Win ;->
