About RunUO

In August of 2002 Zac Torkelson (Krrios) and Ryan McAdams went public with the RunUO Project to share it with the world. Having both participated in various other Ultima Online emulation projects and having extensive backgrounds in Programming, Web Development and Community Management the two set out to eventually dominate the Ultima Online emulation world with a fledgling product. Zac had previously been working on his Ultima Online client so aptly named PlayUO. While working on it he began developing a simulator for the original servers to ensure his client was working properly at a network level. His packet simulator was what eventually grew into the full-fledged Ultima Online server we know today as RunUO.

When it came time for a public release it only made sense to start in the “Beta” phase. RunUO’s development was extremely rapid and lead to 36 beta releases with nearly five thousand code changes, bug fixes and enhancements in the span of about a year. With the release of RunUO 1.0, The RunUO Team handed the community a rock solid product upon which thousands of shards have been built. Throughout this process the RunUO Community grew rapidly and thrived. This community is a reason for the massive success the RunUO team had. The community stood behind the project and in turn The RunUO Team listened and provided rapid, stable development the likes of which were unheard of at the time. Our community worked together to develop features and functionality which eventually made it into our core server product, as well as many custom applications and scripts for RunUO which further entrenched RunUO as the leader in Ultima Online emulation.

The success of RunUO can be placed directly on the shoulders of everyone involved from the “core team” all the way to the forum users who try the software and find problems and report them. All of the combined efforts have resulted in making RunUO the forerunner in Ultima Online emulation and making the software itself stable and bug free.

Our development team continues to work on RunUO along with the community to whom we’ve shared this software. We thank you for your interest and hope you enjoy the community that over one hundred fifty thousand users have helped us build.

Regards,
The RunUO Team
