Actually, it makes the crafters reliant on fighters for the most part. Some of the recipes can be gotten with the ML quests in Heartwood & New Haven, but a majority are gotten from mob loot.

Keep in mind that the OWLTR rewards crafters with recipes as well.
I don't remember the exact formula but a crafter can get 1 recipe per 24 hours (real time, not play time) if he crafted enough items relating to that profession.
Just to give an example (not the right formula for sure) but if a crafter crafted 100 items using blacksmithy than he'll get a random blacksmith recipe, preferably one that he doesn't have.
Then he can craft 1000000 more on the same day without getting another recipe but if he crafted enough than after 24 hours he will get another recipe by crafting another item.
