ICANN changing domain name rules

ICANN changing domain name rules

Thought i'd post in case others haven't heard this yet. Personally I think this is going to suck...

The decision could spell the end for traditional Web addresses ending .com and .org and country names like .jp or .fr with Web sites able to use easier-to-remember suffixes such as .hotel, .fishing or .sex.

There have been numerous requests for new top level domains such as .kids, .shop and .nyc. Last year, ICANN voted to not allow .xxx with its pornography-related overtones.

I wouldn't like that at all. I think the majority of people would be against it.
Really... the only people I could see saying "yeah lets do that" is people who barely use the internet at all. Like the ones who just check email and go to weight watchers website. (like my sister)

I think .com will always be supreme because people are just used to it.

It's the same with the scrambled letters on the keyboard, they used to be lined according to alphabetical order but then redesigned because people were typing too fast for the machine to handle. To this day we're still using QWERTY keyboards.

Wrong, qwerty was invented to spread out the use of the most frequently used letters in order to prevent the machine to use the bars in the same area which would cause an entanglement. An alphabetically ordered keyboard was not more efficient than the qwerty keyboard. Although the azerty layout has been proven more efficient than the qwerty layout, qwerty is still better than an alphabetically ordered layout.

Yeah, I can see people being resilient at first but like all things that change most will learn to adapt.

I like the fact that you can easily identify the source country when there's .fr,.ca,co.jp,co.uk etc.
I do not feel the need to have .hotel at the end of my url to know that its a hotel website.

I agree. Things always change and people adapt to it. Doesn't seem like a huge difference, tying a few different letters to get to a site. I think the change would be annoying, but it would seem old hat soon enough.

There was a time when one would have to type "load" and then "run" to make the games work on a pc. But we all got use to just clicking on a little picture instead.

The funny thing I see is they are going to allow .sex yet banned .xxx because of its sexual overtones.. Im almost certain the local hardware store wont be using a .sex url but a porn site would.

lol I have no doubt that the porn industry will find a way to get their websites seen. No matter what words they ban.

lol that would depend entirely what type of hardware store it is

In montreal we have interesting "hardware" stores.

@Rosetta:
This is not like what you are citing. This is like deciding that a right click will replace a double click and so on.
Its still clicking, its just changing how its done. Which in this case is pointless imo.

I don't understand why they would ban .xxx, I mean let the porn sites use it, then people can just block .xxx names. Its not like the porn sites have any reason to subvert that. They would probably want .xxx names since it would be more memorable than thinking "was it blowjobs.com or blowjobs.net >_<"

yeah, i got no probelm with .xxx .hotel etc, however, the current method of having one be sponsored and then voted on is much better than a complete TLD free for all. That being said, certain ICANN members need to stop voting stupidly (such as nixing the .xxx proposal)

Unfortunatly, those people outnumber us.

I can see that system being more efficient on search engines and parental control. You type hotel into the search engine and it'll probably pull up every site ending with .hotel. Force all porn sites to use the .sex extension and block all sites that end in .sex
