Smoking Banned in State of Illinois

So you're stating that, even if cigarettes are a public health issue, it shouldn't actually be treated like a public health issue?
No, you fucking retard. Go back and read it a little more slowly. For me, the issue of the government poking it's big fucking nose in where it doesn't fucking belong is more of an issue to me than the health issue. Those that don't smoke, don't have to be around those of us that do smoke. All of us that live in this country have to deal with the government's intrusions into our private lives.

Kansas is considering implementing a similar ban. Welcome to 1984. The government should have no right to dictate what someone can do with their private businesses. I know some will make the comparison between allowing smoking, and the right to eject black people. There is a difference. Smoking is a choice, being black (or mexican, or any other minority) is not a choice. Whoever tries to use that argument is using a flawed argument.

The argument is to point out that society already reserves a right to intrude on these not-so-private spaces, and feels that its needs are legitimately addressed by doing so on occasion. Like it or not, our nation has decided that these places aren't as private as your firm use of the word 'private' would otherwise make out.

How do you feel about minimum wage laws, out of curiosity?

How about work place safety laws?

Suppose the business owner threatens to fire an underling unless, you know... they provide a little action? Isn't that a private transaction in a private space? Doesn't the underling have a free choice to move on? Surely you don't think they havvvvve to work there, do you?

so what it sounds like to me is "move out of America ASAP"

I can think of an exceedingly Libertarian free market destination, where the government will stay clean out of your life:

Somalia.

Don't have an opinion either way to be honest since I am no longer able to work. And don't try to bait me into another useless argument. Either state your reasoning for asking the questions or just shut up.

The fact is that we already have government intruding into our lives enough, why do we need even more laws? I hope you all enjoy Big Brother watching over your every move. No personal responsibility, no tough decisions to make. Wow, what a utopia that would be.

If you don't, then form one. Minimum wage laws and work place safety laws are an example of the government intruding into a 'private' place for a public reason. That you don't have an opinion on such an issue, this suggests to me that it's not that you dislike government interference, it's that you don't like government interference that applies to you. This is pretty normal, but certainly unseats you from that high horse pretty quickly, now doesn't it?

I understand that it's easier by quite a measure to be sheep, but less government interference benefits everyone. Besides, I've already stated that if I was a non-smoker, I would still feel the same way. We already have laws in place that protect people in the workplace, why do we need more.

You non-smokers like to make the assumption that all of the smokers in the world are insensitive pricks. I don't smoke around my kids, I don't smoke around people that express a desire to not be smoked around. Why should the government tell me to do something that I already do voluntarily? Seems like a waste of money to me.

Lol. Cuz making that statement totally dismisses any possible bias you might have , right?
I'm actually in the process of quitting smoking, to be honest. So I guess we'll see if I still feel the same way after I quit.

So far, the "less government interference" that you are asking for is something that affects you personally. You even dismissed the minimum wage with casual indifference, on the grounds that it was not meaningful to you because you no longer worked. You really shouldn't go around calling other people "sheep" when you're behaving like the typical "what's in it for me" voter. Sounds kind of sheepish.

By the by, whenever you're particularly disgusted with "government interference" take a good look around you. The government is We The People. Typically, it's composed of "what's in it for me" folks. You know, people like you.

If you really think that "we The People" are in charge of our government anymore, you are in far worse shape than I thought. And no, the proposed smoking ban doesn't affect me personally because I don't own a business, and no matter what laws are passed regarding smoking, I will still continue to do what I have always done. And no, I don't just vote for things based on what is in it for me, I vote for things that will benefit everyone. Our country is in sad, sad shape because of the "me first" mentality that a lot of people have. When I vote, I vote for people and issues that will hopefully change that.

Heard of a recall campaign? Too much trouble for you? Too apathetic about it? Yes, yes, and yes.

The average person in this country (meaning the majority, by a lot) is a Democrat. That's another way of saying sort-of-socialist. They're apathetic, thank god, and don't vote (as often as the repugs).

Otherwise the "guvmint" that you don't like would be bigger and badder.

The fact of the matter is, these smoking bans, in the various states, are generally POPULAR.

The blame lies with the People.

Duh, I don't think I have enough pull as a free thinking person in a mostly redneck republican state to get a recall vote to take place.

Your assumption that I'm a democrat amuses me. I'm more conservative than people give me credit for.

Slavery was pretty popular a while back, too.
